Hi Mel. I know the 5D is very good at high ISO. My "Colours" image, in my portfolio, was shot at 3200 ISO and is fairly noise free. I'm not sure why I was getting noise when shooting long exposures at high f stops. After I took this shot, I tried again and got some good shots at f40, 4 sec. and ISO 125. Amaryllis 4 was shot at these settings and may be the best of the bunch. When I was having troubles, the shots were significantly over exposed with the camera set at 0 compensation, so I decreased the compensation to get a proper exposure. These shots were noisy. Then, I took more care to select AF points that coincided with the part of the flower which I wanted in neutral exposure. That seem to help. You are very correct about practice practice and I'm doing lots of that. :) :) As well, viewing all the excellent images on this site and discussing issues with follow members is invaluable. Thanks very much for all your help and suggestions. Very much appreciated. All the best, Joe

Hi Joe, I dont think noise should be a problem if you are shooting at ISO 50 or 100, even up to 800 my 5D is quite good. Of course there's always Noiseware to reduce the noise, it can be quite helpful and its still free last time I looked. Google will find it. I'm sorry about not being more specific earlier, when I said diffuse window light I did mean when there were clouds....sorry about that....lol! Best thing I've found is practise practise practise....you only need delete the files if they aren't any good :)
Good luck Mel

Thanks very much Mel for all your comments and valuable feedback. I didn't try diffusing the light, other than when a cloud passed by. I should try that. I had been shooting a high f stops 36 - 45 but the images where quite noisy. I don't understand that. Maybe it is the lens. This image was captured at f7.10 at 1/13 sec. I used a remote shutter release on all the shots. The camera was set in Av mode with expose a tad to left, too far left and it got noisier, I was even using the mirror lockup feature. I really appreciate you help and your photos are beautiful, I love that little frog. All the best, Joe

Hi Joe, as long as you are using a tripod, I'd try using diffuse window light, f/22 and let the camera choose the shutter speed. Cable release so you don't blur the shot, and leave it to do the job. I don't think you'll get as much burnout with this...as long as your exposure is set to the left of centre a tad. Anyway, good luck with it. These flowers are beautiful. Thanks also for your comments on my photos, much appreciated. Mel

I like this composition over the previous one more the tighter cropping holds the space and keeps my eye focused strongly on your subject matter. It also has more tension which just adds to the power of you image. The choice of a blue/gray background also sets off the reds in the Amaryllis as well without blowing it off the page.

I like this one much better than the one with the plain black background. The lighting and background go very well together here
Good Job Dad!

Very nice composition on this one, Joe! Nice balance between saturation and exposure. The reds came out beautifully here. Maybe darkening the background slightly would bring the flowers out a little. I like it as it is though. Dave.

Hi Art, Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly how I shot it using natural light coming in the window to the left. This morning, due to light cloud cover, the light was less intense than on a sunny day. When I try to give it more pop people say I have blown out the highlights and I loose detail, I think it is a challenging subject. Any specific suggestions.

Composition is good but it seems to lack the pop. I think you need to work on lighting to give it more of the wow look.
