About Hina doll with kaleidoscope filter, curves adjusted. Bounce flash, E-TTL, first curtain.
My composition to break the symmetry is intentional. Many do not like filters or effects; I use them for a specified outcome and do not shy away from them nor do I feel they are "impure".

Annemette -- Thanks so much for viewing and making such generous comments. You are so right about less messy; years ago I maintained an elaborate dark room and between the smell, the spills, cleaning up and the cost to maintain it, I was glad when I finally dismantled it.
I always have fun taking pictures and sometimes the Photo-shop work is the most rewarding part.
Thanks again for your comments.
--Best to you, Jan

I love what you did to this image, Jan! Great work fascinating to look at. No, I agree. Why feel shy about using PS and other photoprograms when photographers have always been doing some of the same changes in a darkroom?! Now it can be done in a less messy way, but it still takes skills to master the techniques.
Take care
Annemette

Michele -- Thanks so much for commenting. It is funny but the smaller the size of this photo you look at, the more "waffle" like it looks.
Good observation!
And the philosophy of pleasing yourself is definitely a valid approach to photography. The only problem with that approach is that if the work is so "outsider" you might be the only one who ever "gets it" or "enjoys it". A small price to pay when it is just a hobby.
But if this is how you earn your living and you lose commerciality then paying the rent and food bills might be a bit of a problem.
--Best regards, Jan

Onie -- Thanks so much; I do worry sometimes about where that "fine line" is but you have to go with your instincts. The oriental quilt comment is interesting because I thought of that when first viewing the thumbnail. Maybe this is an idea worth exploring for a design for a line of Asian motif bed linens or some such. :)

With you all the way Jan... :)... Being creative is the *fun* part... What is the difference between *staging* a photo, or, using it out of context, to creating... A very fine line indeed ~~GRIN~~...

The visual is the ultimate outcome of enjoyment for the creator and the observer... This is great Jan... Makes me think of an Oriental Quilt...:)

Extra nice concept Sir...:)

Mel -- Thanks so much for the affirmation of the approach. I do take and present for fun, specifically to give my point of view. But as Doyle had indicated, unconsciously I had prepares a preemptive defense! :) I appreciate the comments.

I understand why you explain your reasons behind what you do, since we do like everyone to love us....but as Doyle says...its really ourselves we have to please. I like this site for that reason, there are less purists in evidence, either that or they aren't bothering to look at my work, and there's lots of good friends to share our ideas with!!
This is very nicely done, Jan, I like what you've achieved here! The impure filter has worked a treat, as has the non-symmetrical composition :)
Best to you....
Mel

Doyle --- You killed me with this comment; sides hurt from laughing. You called me on it; preemptive defense; so true -- so true.
You are right.. what I think is what matters but like the true artist that I am (teehee) I am attuned to the external vibes that come my way.
Excellent comments that you lace with side splitting humor. You made my day and thanks.

Harrrrrrumpf. Impure.

That's it!

BWA HAHAHAHAAA!! Look at you! Pre-emptive defense . . . Looks like those two overseas tours taught some things you can use here too, huh?? It's a fun shot, unique, creative and enjoyable. When all's said and done . . . isn't it what you think that matters?? You should see how my parents feel about Picasso! If you've seen his work . . . his images aren't exactly rennaissance quality realism, huh?

Don't think I'm comparing your work to Picasso. I've seen Picasso paintings and this is NOT one! My parents would be much more likely to hang this on their wall than Picasso!! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Jan Hoffman Jan Hoffman   {K:39467} 3/8/2007
Thanks, Paul. Yes.. there are good reasons to do post-camera work beyond adjusting color balance, cropping etc. For some reason though, on USEFILM and elsewhere there is a goodly number of photgs. that think applying post-shot filters and effects is "cheap" or beneath the art form. This debate will never be settled but since I take no commercial shots, I do not pose as an "artist" and I do this for fun, I just bumble through doing what I like to do.

oh, yeah, this is really cool, Jan!

Honestly, I think the purist notion of 'this is exactly how I captured it' is admirable, but at times, I visualize something completely different even AS I'm taking the shot.
