Hmmm, a good camera and automatic settings are way not enough for good photography, Ursula.

Intuition is not something that falls from the sky but rather the result of too many thoughts that run faster than a detailed description of them would be possible while they run. They are results of having dealt with some matter for a long time and thus having collected the knowledge that tells "automatically" what to do to achieve something. A guitarist on the scene does not play intuively without having any idea of for example what a chord is. Playing only "accidentaly" such a guitarist would produce one good tone during performance but the rest would be simply garbage.

So there must be much more than that, like for example the knowledge of what to do, should somebody want to have only the table absolutely sharp and the rest absolutely unsharp - or similar situations. Without such a knowledge we can have as much intuition as we wish - we wouldn't achieve anything. Except of course for some accidentally nice shots.

Best wishes,

Nick

Well,I have a good camera, luckily, and use mostly autmatic settings..with a 18-200 mm lens...and the rest is intuitiv. So i would say my shots are coincidental and random :-)))I try to keep it up !
Thank you...
Ursula

OK, I ask you, what is 1+1 equal to? ;-)

The total amateur *will* at some given time turn to a not so "total" amateur, in case the interest for photography is high enough. Settings are the basics of consious photographic work, of course only if we would't like to turn it to some kind of roulette and earn good critiques out of a coincidence - or do I miss something? ;-)

BTW, you must have had a not very narrow aperture since your DoF is a bit selective. Perhaps about 1:2-1:4, which could be also supported by the low light conditions. As about shutter speed, well, hard to say, as it depends on your lens, but it could have been around 1/10 second?

Anyway, amateurism doesn't have to be equal to completely relying on coincidence, or does it? ;-)

Have a nice weekend and keep it up!

Nick

A very nice capture where all the metalic shine seems to idealy complement the dark night. But not only this. In a very remarkable way the cold metal shines very... warm, at least for my eyes, and this makes thise hues to a very nice surrounding for the cup of coffee and the mobile - as some kind of symbols for a human presence in the empty restaurant. This seems to work hand in hand with the selctive focus that concentrates on the main subject - those personal things on the table - and leaves the rest gradually go into blurryness.

May I ask you what your setting were on this one, Ursula?

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Ursula! I like the few elements here; a very evocative & moody shot. A cup of coffee and a cell phone in case you feel alone :) Nice light/reflections, and the phone looks just perfect for this table & chairs!
