About
A post a few days ago has me thinking. How do I judge balance in a photo? There is no doubt in my mind there are several photo-centric formulas for balance. I am honest enough to say I never heard of the rule of thirds until 15 years into my photographic journey. I do not read photo journals. I do not join chat rooms. I do not study the great photographers of history (which in itself is rather interesting as I do have a bit of connection to history in general) So the question remains, "What do I know about balance?" I will explain it as best as I can, from point of view. Balance to me is when your eyes want to travel over the entire image of their own volition. There may be a central point, but the edges and sides of the image pull your eyes there, even if it is just for a second or less. Think about this... If you look at a photo and see the subject right off and that is all you notice, generally, the balance is off. You have been drawn or forced to that point. If, on the other hand, you see the subject but then have this overpowering urge to look at another area of the photo... then come back to the subject... that is when I say the balance is perfect. If your eyes eventually focus on the center of the image to absorb all the photo offers, then there is balance. Now, I do not always balance everything to my liking. Now and then I am trying to make a point. But in my world, where I shoot strictly on skill/talent, limited or imagined... the very center point of the image is where my eyes are at rest, and my brain is actively scanning the remainder of the area.... that for me is balance. The eyes centered,relaxed... the brain wandering.
