About This Red Fox was an incredible hunter. He caught several voles by leaping high in the air and diving headfirst into the snow to snatch them from their icy burrows. He is depicted doing this earlier in my portfolio. I just wish I had been smart enough to bring the tripod that day. This is also a rework of an earlier image I posted.

A beautiful capture, Fred! He looks great against that splarkling snow, too.

André: Thank you for the thoughtful observations. When we first saw him, we thought that he might be a coyote because he was so large for a fox. A good friend has a Labrador Retriever who also loves to dive into the snow for her toys after she has buried them. She became an excellent avalanche rescue dog at one of our ski resorts.

Michele: Thank you again for your gracious remarks. I am not sure he liked me so much but merely tolerated my snapping away for quite a long time. Unfortunately, I only saw him one more time since these shots taken in March, 2004.

Hi Fred,
Great shot of this beautiful specimen! He almost looks like a half breed Fox/Coyote. Maybe just that winter coat? He seems to have very long legs for a fox.
I've seen them hunting just like you described... jumping up in the air and breaking into the snow with all four legs. I've seen house cats here in Toronto doing the same thing in backyards full of snow. Quite comical to watch them.
