About Found this horse in a local pasture. I found the mask to be fascinating. I have NO idea why he had to wear one. Of the four horses in that pasture, he was the only one masked.

Thank you Barbara for you kind words. We have had lots of rain lately, so.... all the grass is green. I think this might be a Quarter horse.

it reminds me of ourselves, closed eyes and being given something as a joy just to forget our blindness...
how about a bit more sharpness on the grass?
nice shot Laura!

Looks like he has good grass, maybe they didn't want it to see what it was eating, so you think it is a race horse? This is a excellent picture and job. thanks for sharing.

Thank you for that information George. My Son (who is NOT a horse person) speculated that the horse may have had a problem with biting the other horses in the pasture. I like your explanation best! lol

Great image Laura. My first thought was "Who was that masked horse?" Followed, of course, by " . . . and I didn't even get a chance to Thank him!" LoL! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

I see that George has explzined the purpose of the mask. The insects can be terribly annoying for the horses. It would be like us going out in black fly or mosquito season with no protection. The horse is a lot calmer and much more comfortable when protected from the nasgty little flying critters.

As David correctly suggests, these masks are used to keep insects, primarily flies out of the eyes of horses where they often lay eggs. The mesh of the mask is fine enough to allow the horse to see. Quite often horses belonging to multiple owners are grazed together, so this would appear that the owner of this horse cared a bit more about the animal than the other owners.

Thanks for showing us this interesting shot. Well composed with good detail. More importantly, you are showing sone of us something we have nver seen before. I am guessing it is not a beauty mask, so lets go with a better guess: a sore eye? I assume only one side of the masked was closed (or how else did he get there?).
--Best regards, Jan

Good crop and capture here, Laura! Possibly the mask is to keep insects out of the horse's eyes, but I don't know why he'd be the only one.

Laura this is amazing- I have never seen a horse picture like this. Such an unusual mask too. I have no idea why either. Great the proportion you have and the mounting of it. Makes it very moving!
