About This image (3730) was shot in Discovery Park on 27 June 2006.

The subject is a small piece of metal set into a huge concrete block such as are used during certain constructions projects (usually to keep cars from going somewhere).

It has been resized, shrunk, and auto-contrasted (and I added the matting).

Special thanks to Paul Michalowski for encouraging me to post this image:

Thank you for clarifying that, James! Apparently, suggestive thinking is always a part of it in the mapping from the set of what we see onto the set of what we *perceive*. In other words, on the search of our minds to find reality, we often see recognizable patterns that... don't exist! (Like for example my rust -> wall surface ;-))

Nick - Yes, I think you have it right now. The moss at the bottom is growing on the top surface of the concrete block and the wall is the piece of metal used to lift the block to move it about (rusted, yes).

I see, James! Anyway, your work is even more stunning, considering the fact that you don't have that level of control!

As about the "wall", which I was referring to, I thought that it was that block of concrete - but it was the metal thing you have talk about? I thought that I see the concrete block and that that little metal piece *was* in the hole but that it was removed when you shot this one. The texture of it is very "wall-like". Is it the rusted surface of the metal piece?

Nick - I would love to shoot with more aperature control, but I don't have a dSLR at the moment. My SD550 won't give me that level of control. Good camera, but limited in scope. I do what I can with it.

Oh, and that thing you are referring to as a wall is probably about four inches tall.

James, the pattern on the wall is intriguing in its coloring and detail. And the general look is very fresh and live - just like lying down in front of the wall and being not able to focus the grass lying near.

Still, another way to capture it would be to use a very narrow aperture and get everything as sharp as the wall. This would turn it to a very different image, that I assume wouldn't match your own intension, but I talk about that as an additional possibility.

Best wishes,

Nick

Hehe. Naw. I threw naked into the title hoping more people would take a look. Maybe it worked. It has 72 views and only 4 comments (excluding mine). I guess people are at least looking at it.

Eric - Thanks. I was apprehensive about this one until I saw Paul's image. His DoF is tighter, but I thought this one was ok because of the greater surrounding detail. And I really like the coloration of the steel.

Paul - Thanks. I realized that even though I was not able to get the DoF as tight as I had hoped (like yours) that this image was still pretty good with the detail in the moss and the three color zones. Anyway, in case anyone wants to click to your iamge:

Keep up the good work.
