Well, I am only guessing that is how it works. Last week (15 June) my Pink Ranunculus image was nominated for an award in the forum by Randy Lorance - the next day it was awarded a DOD. So, when I saw Kambiz nominate your photo, I thought you would get one.
However, in saying that, I have noticed that, in the last week or so, many of the recommendations are not receiving awards. I think a lot more are missing out than usual. If you visit the forum, and click on each of the nominations you will notice that not a lot of them are getting awards.
Even in the general photos, if you scroll back through the pages you will notice that the awards have dropped off a bit on the usual rate that they were being issued. Perhaps the standard of the photos being submitted is not as high.
I'm not complaining - I have received three in the last two weeks - that's enough to last me a year!!! LOL LOL
Mate, enjoy your success, it doesn't matter how you got the award - you deserve it!
Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phil!
I had no idea about this one.. funny how the awards just pop up sometimes! I had one win a BIP almost 2 months after I posted it. My thought is that there are staff members that are assigned to monitor projects/areas to assign awards. ..and the DOD staff member tagged this one a week later, as it doesn't show up in the DOD page. Hmmm.
I am honored that I won another award! Crazy! You and I just love aiming the camera at what we believe in our hearts looks amazing, and then spend glorious hours infront of our computers moving crop lines in 2 pixels at a time to make sure were happy with what we captured. What I don't understand, are the people that complain about awards not coming their way..and maybe that's just it. They are taking pictures for the wrong reasons.
Hope winter started okay down there. It's crackin' heat here... so my weekend project.. take pictures of heat ripple... When in Rome I guess!
cheers, and thanks again!

Love the shot Joel. Super detail and sharp, I got trouble with a tripod and you handhold at 1/15th of a sec and do this. Well done. The V in the 2 roads is great as are the shades of grey in the buildings. You of course knew that the chance of any terrorist activity in this building is next to nil since Peter Parker uses the same roof. Regards Ron.

"So...how 'bout them Mavericks?" ;)
(getting back to the imagery at hand)
I am really impressed with the exposure, and how the ambient blue sky-light is in such strong contrast with the sodium lights below, Joel.
Glad you reminded us all that when it comes to photography, there is only a theoretical 'later' but truly only a NOW. Catch the shot, grab the moment now, because later may never present itself.

Joel I appreciate your honesty. But in my opinion, rule is RULE. I always follow rules. This is the reason that I appreciate Oliver North in that political problem, because he followed the RULE.
If I were you I write an anonymous letter to the head of security office in China and explain about the lax situation of their security. At the end of day all of us should protect ourselves and civilian from those who claim they are head hunters!

Dear Gayle I am VERY surprised from your comment!!
I K N O W that Joel took that LOVELY MAGE (Queens Road Vertigo) in China, NOT USA!
but THEN it seems to me that you DO NOT follow the NEWS around our globe EVERYDAY on your local paper, international paper and internet news (loads of them)!!!! and all of satelite channels!
It doesn't matter where terrorists are, "WE" have to find them and KILL them instantly WITHOUT asking before hand. (Oh of course we might ask them LATER!)
Look what is going on in Afganistan, Iraq, Africa, Central America, and of course are beloved Guantanamo Bay [4 bloody years without having any trials, legal representations, legal court, so on ....).
I BET YOU if "WE" had one of those advanced UFO Technologies, "WE" could go after those terrorists in other universes!
SO, please do NOT tell me I read it WRONG!
God Bless Shalom Salam and of course NAMASTE'

An amazing shot Joel . . . and I never considered the terrorist thing until Kambiz brought it up. If that were a bomb and not a camera you could have blown yourself up and made little red spots on all those people and cars! The car wash business would have ruled for a day and profited from their capitalistic enterprises at the expense of the exploding proletariat!! Umbrella distributers would have sold out and the stranded populace . . . exposed to the rains you yourself confess were coming . . . could have gotten ill and seen that the medical personnel (unlike the US system) would have been oppressed by the thronging masses seeking safety from illness. It could have been ANARCHY! (My apologies to Kambiz for the humor--or what I pass off as humor . . . it's nothing personal). That being said . . . the image WAS better with the camera than an explosive device. VERY well done Joel . . . and welcome home . . . where the rooftops are secure.

Rina,
thanks for your @#%@$ amazing comments! I am flattered!
And yes... KK's comments had me wondering what forum I was reading. I think that Hong Kong has it figured out, and my guess is that the mob there has a much tighter grip on their comunity than is obvious. I'm sure that as soon as tall white guy like me got on the roof, there were at least 4 of them watching me take pictures of their @#%@$ amazing city, that I hope always stays that way.
Thanks again Rina! Appreciate your comments very much!

I'm glad the image has an effect on you! ...my first thought when I shot this was that I wished I could get across the rush of looking straight down. My boss, and our Hong Kong partner was there to watch, as I did eveything I could to get over the edge :) Since it was my second trip to HK, and possibly my last to the roof for a while, I had to go for it.
Thanks for the comments!

Kambiz,
it was easy. I just walked the stairs to the roof, right past the sign that said, "caution, roof", and walked around the top like a sniper. ;) (see attached image of the building)
To be honest, Hong Kong is a very safe place. You would expect that froma city that is run by it's business men, rather than a government of blow hards.
thank you very much for the very kind comments about my photo, and VERY much for the push to the members board for a vote! I appreciate that very much!

Exellent image. Indeed you are a very dedicated amateur photographer who could put his life in danger in order to capture a unique photo.
I wonder how you went on the roof despite the extreme security matter about terrorism!
Has any security officers stopped you on your way up?
If NOT then I wonder how Mr Bush would like to stop the terrorism if a simple office breach the codes of security????????
Hope to see the other 19 images here at UF!
p.s.- If I were a UF judge, I would give you a UFVT. therefore I am going to vote for your image because you did an extra hard work to catch that lovely image. Good luck.

Yes.. i'm back. I've been insane busy. My only free time to play with images is in the hours before sleep. I may have to go again for a 3rd time (and not the last) in a few weeks. I hope that I at least get ONE single day with sun next time.
It've been trying so hard to keep up with all the new images that everyone is posting. It's kind nice to step away for a few days, then hit the 'friends' link, and see all the new subjects and styles that everyone is trying. Now I gotta sit and look at all the fine work everyone has posted!
Today was my first day off in a few weeks. Did nothing but walk around with my camera around town. ..and relax...
Thanks so much for the comment! Appreciate your comments very much! hope it's not getting too chilly down there.
