Doyle, Back on the 22nd I asked permission to paint from your PARROT "SUN CONURE"- TNX

It's now finished, will take a photo, what the best way to let just you see it first?

Doyle, thanks for the permission to try to paint your SUN CUNURE; I've already got it blocked in on the canvass. It's going to be hard to get the vivid colors of the photo in acrylic.
FYI, my MOMMA WOLF is not completed, what you saw was one corner of my canvass there is to be two clubs. As I said-love your photo.

great idea....
the beak shouldn't be cut off
the depth of field need to be better as so much is fuzzy that is important such as the eye and the beak
colors are great, you captured them very nicely

High praise, indeed, from you Marcus. Dubious . . . but kind. Unfortunately . . . I enjoy far too much to concentrate on one form of photography. Something tells me you'd be good at other forms of photography too! :)

That`s true.
I like your point of view.
I think the same.
Dignity+peace+little comfort.
Nobody needs more than that... and is shameful that so few can affect so many.
That`s what a citizen of the world must sustain, Doyle.

Yes Eze, like me, you have discovered that most people are not so very different after all . . . give them dignity, peace and a small modicum of comfort and most will be happy regardless of their national affiliations. Shameful that so few can affect so many.

Yes, Doyle. You are right.

Thanks Christine! As has been said throughout the critiques on this (more or less) . . . EYE FOCUS! And you're quite right . . . it would have improved the picture and that's what I want to hear when I list this as a CC image. I appreciate that the honesty is difficult . . . and find your critique to be honest and helpful. Thank you. The border comments, though related to presentation and not image are fair game as well and I am really glad to hear honest opinions there as well. True, I'd rather hear how much I'm a genius and this is an incredible work of art . . . and that National Geographic is on hold hoping to hire me; but only if it's the honest truth. Framing is subjective . . . but honest opinions at least can help to guide a person.
Thank you Christine, for the well thought out and honest critique you took the time to provide me. I very much appreciate it.

what a colorful capture, the color of the feathers is fantastic, very nice abstract shot of this bird.. I think the light is very direct and a bit harsh, but the composition is very good...
nice shot!

...exquisite colors and amazing details, but i find the border to be a little busy and rather distracting once i'm looking at the full image and not just the thumbnail...the image itself though is superb...i might have liked it just a touch better if the camera had been focused on its eye...i don't know if that's just part of the coloring of the bird but it looks a little blurry around the eye...great capture though!

Thanks John . . . very nice of you to comment . . . As we've both said (and often to each other as well I think) . . . timing is everything! You're right, I'm very much enjoying myself and even infected my wife with this fun little past-time (which cost me another Nikon purchase, but should give me more photo shooting trips). I find the UF help to truly be helpful and have left a few of my 2003 photos up to remind myself how much it has helped. Whether I agree or not, I always enjoy seeing the thinking of others . . . and smiled very hard at the thought of mounting a tripod and manually focusing on a bird's eye! Although the image was funny to me, the point made was valid about eye focus . . . though I might be better served to use that auto fire feature and simply snap a ton of shots to catch it!
I always appreciate hearing from you John . . . and I think Yankee was only hoping I'd set the camera down for him to play with! :P

WOW! I came across this as a recent posting and I have to tell ya' Doyle, it really caught my eye. This is a tough crowd here at UF!!! Living things are seldom predictable, I've read the con's, but I like the pro's! The detail in the feathers is extremely bold and attractive, the color is vividly captured and the composition is nicely presented. Your lighting and exposure are (again!) well matched. Your portfolio represents much hard work and success, I enjoy visiting your images. Your peers can tell the care that you give to your compositions and the love you have for your subjects by viewing your pieces. We all strive for perfection, but let's face it Doyle, when all is said and done, it's only photography (and Yankee doesn't care!)I'm glad you're having fun, it shows. -john

Miles:
BG issues arising from this shot was a great point . . . I'll have to keep that in mind in the future, although I do already, I clearly missed this one! As to the beak and room on the bottom of the composition . . . I know personal preference varies and am glad to hear your input . . . my thought was that the amazingly small DOF made dropping the bottom crop an unrelated issue in that it added a layer which was out of focus. Different strokes for different folks on that one, I guess. You are quite correct that the DOF is tiny . . . I used a micro lens (105; f/2.8) and that is what you get from that lens. My intent was to get serious feather texture and color and the limits of the lens made a tiny DOF a given. You are 100% correct (in my opinion) that USUALLY animal shots need that focus on the eye. This little guy moves! I thought the shot was good anyway for other reasons. Intially, I even considered a different crop to eliminate it (the eye), but it turned out to be inadvisable for other issues. This Sun Conure is an extremely active hookbill (parrot family) and there is literally no way--with him--that I could use a tripod and manually focus on the eye as you suggest. It simply would not work with this bird. A shame really, because I agree very much that using a tripod, f/8 and deeper DOF would have helped a bit. Flash softening is a great idea . . . I've never done that and would LOVE to know how you do this with bubble wrap! I used, in point of fact, a built in flash and not a flash gun. Another alternative is to set up external lights, right? Perhaps I should try this with the AF 80-300 lens . . . the quicker focus would allow a better chance to capture the eye and get a deeper DOF too . . . Telephoto-macro if you will.
At any rate Miles . . . I very much appreciate you taking the time to make a detailed critique and giving me things to consider for the next compostion. Time consuming for you, but helpful to all who read it. This is the type of critique that should be listed on the front page as a featured critique!

Good idea, and a nice colourful shot... but. Firstly this would have been so much better if the background was plain and neutral, instead of having the large dark line coming out of the top of the beak. Secondly I personally feel that this would have looked more complete if you'd given the bottom of the beak a little more room, instead of cutting the tip off. Thirdly the DOF is tiny, and the point of focus is off the eye. Usually for animal shots the critical focus point is on the eye. The first two just require an attention to detail to fix, have a good look around the frame for anything that might look out of place or that distracts from the shot before pressing the button. It can make a lot of difference. The focus point is a little trickier... I would have had the camera on a tripod with a remote release, focussed manually tight on that eye, and hoped the bird didn't move! You might have got away with F8 to increase the DOF a little. I also think I would have softened the flash a little, lots of devices to do that on the market such as Stofen diffusers, though sticking a little bubblewrap infront of the flash works well to... only I'm assuming you used a flash gun as opposed to the built in flash.
