Photography at it's best. Even the slight camera shake does not deter from the beauty of this landscape, it even seems to add a sense of motion to the composition. Love it. :) Andree

Thanks, James, this scene always has a calming effect on me, and I wish I started earlier in photography, so I would've had the chance of capturing it in various circumstances...

Well composed, natural colors, good sky... I see very little to improve on. This is that great time when the sky is turning burnt orange, yet there is still light falling hitting the foreground.

Cheers,

Hi John, good to hear from you. It's definitely very vast, at least for Dutch standards; but if you look at the next photo, you'll see that it's only a matter of direction..:) Would be cool to see that comparison! Keep me informed, please?

Hello Hugo, This is such a wonderful scene of the creek and meadows! The building in the far distance seem to be miles away! What a vast area here!
We have some very similar scenes right here in South Jersey. This is very similar!
I will be in the lookout for a shot like this and will post it in the future to be able to compare the areas. Again Very nice scene and compositon My friend! Take care Hugo!

Very nice Hugo, you fooled me with the foreground, I thought it was the wind on the water that gave it the shimmer. But I do like the blue there reflected from the sky. Was it a cold morning? It gives me that impression for some reason.

Hi Mireille, thanks for the feedback... As to the human presence in the boat, I doubt it; as there's no boat in this image...:) You're not the only one to see it, though, and I actually had to check the original file to make sure myself...:)

Hi Hugo,
You captured a great moment here-pure magic!
The strong green/brown yellow tones make the dominating blue not only stand out but also seperate it perfectly.
You did very well by including 2/3 of this amazing sky (makes a perfect composition) - I guess you know that I'm an absolute sky fan ;)
Am I right in perceiving another human being (other than you as the photographer) in the boat?
Regards, Mireille
P.S. I guess you missed the "almost never shining Luxembourgish sun" in one of my previous uploads (www.usefilm.com/image/1112609.html)

Hi Leora,

Thanks for the feedback; It might very well be the chemical plant's pollution causing this light, but the environmental regulations in the Netherlands are very stricth; besides, the light in this area is famous, and always very attractive. It's a series of large peninsulas in the south of the Netherlands, with sea all around, with generally speaking very clear and crisp sea air... The influence of the plant can be neglected, luckily...

Cheers,

Hugo

Leora Long Leora Long   {K:11135} 6/3/2006
As you seem to be a purist, Hugo, the yellow on the horizon must be from the chemical plant. We are used to unusual color effects in the New Jersey area.

This is a stunning effect along with the blues and greens.

A Boat?! Where? Where? I just *love* boats! Heheheheh:)

on a more serious note, I really think it's a pity this photo doesn't have a basket of kittens in it, because I *love* baskets of kittens too! But maybe it's there, please find it for me?...

It's just great how you tweaked the tone, you really made the beautiful boat stand out! Very well done!

good work my friend.

Hi Antonia,

Always a good excersise to fiddle around with the image. I think there are many different options, mostly differntiating on subtleties and subjectivities.

Interesting idea of dodging the boat; didn't know there was one in the photo....:) I think it's a bit of grass looking like the a boat..heheheh

Anyways, I like the thought, emphasising the wideness of the scene. An instinctive, natural solution, pretty close to the original shot.

Cheers,

Hugo

I must be crazy for having the gumption to post my version, but I played with it without looking at the whole list of comments in order to put it another way. My motive -- just because the image called to me to give it a go. I love your version Hugo. This one offers some alternatives. I dodged the boat to pop it. I cooled down the yellow at the horizon -- just liked it that way, and then I gave it a different crop to accentuate the impressionistic land formation. Last, I pulled blues, purples and greens out throughout the land, sea and sky to connect them. As I said, I love your version, and this is just plain fun. Antonia

Hi Petal, Thanks for your comment. I go to this exact same spot almost 6 times a year for the last 15 years or so, and the landscape seems different each time; I have a few decent B&W photos, but other than that, I don't have anything to show for; the weather at that time of day makes the difference between a lifeless image and this (rather stunning) scene.... Lateron, the contrast between the grass and the westerschelde sand is just too week to get a decent shot.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Randy, thanks for your feedback. Not so sure the ambiguity in the foreground is a good thing, considering the comments... Would you tink it would be better if it were less "controversial / more straight forward? or should I consider the various explanations a good thing, triggering the viewers' minds?

Cheers,

Hi Hugo, the ripples in sand through me off too until I read your explanation. I saw the blur in grass caused by wind and thought the texture being commented on must be choppy water, it isn't readily recognizable as water on sand.
Very nice peacefull landscape, The band of bright green grass forms a good horizon line separating the photo at 1/3rd.

Hi Joggie, thanks for the feedback. I agree, I owe a lot to the camera for this one.... The thing that attracted me in this photo was the bright reflection of the sky above me in the wet sand, reviving the place. I go to this specific place about 6 times a year for the last 15 years, I believe, but never actually managed to capture it like this. You need to be there just before sunrise, otherwise the magic is gone (still beautiful, but not as spectacular) Unfortunately, you're not allowed to enter this part (de schorren) as it's a wild life reservation / rest area.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Roby, Thanks for your feedback. I used these camera settings, as I wanted everything in view to be in focus (hyperfocal), with a minimum amount of noise. That combination requires a low sensibility and a small aperture, resulting in a rather long shutter speed. Maybe I should've compromised a bit, as the wind was pretty fierce, resulting in some motion blur in the grass...

Cheers,

Hugo

Excellent landscape Hugo. I like the 1/3 land 2/3 sky split - Gives the image a spacious and open atmosphere. The light is great with the different variations of exposure in the cloud especially intersting. The detail on the sand in the foreground and the patterns in the water complete an interesting and absorbing scene - similar to the paintings of some of the old masters. Great work as always(this also demostrate the sensitivity and capabilities of the D2X exposure meter and CCD very well).

heheheeh... The thought crossed my mind, but you had me looking too, wondering if I had screwed up again somewhere... Think I could put it in my about, it's an easy mistake to make - I really began to doubt myself when I opened the image after reading your comment, too...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Lisa, I did use a tripod and wire release, but it was a rather windy morning. I think that must be it; If I look at the original, the pattern in the wet sand is perfectly in focus, but the grass seems to be sweeping back and forth a bit...

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks John, I used a tripod with wire release, but it was rather windy that morning, blurring the grass. Guess that softens the grass a bit...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Rina, thanks for the feedback. The image is basically straight out of the camera, no fancy PS work / layer stuff. Only a bit of level tweaking. I think what you mean is the rippled pattern in the wet sand (hence its reflectiveness) created by the receeding water at low tide.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Laura, thanks for the feedback. The "strange markings" in the foreground are created by the receeding water at low tides, creating an intricate pattern of ripples in the wet sand. The image is basically straight out of the camera, imported from RAW and only saved as JPEG once (this version)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Gayle, thanks for the feedback. The odd markings you refer to are probably the patterns in the wet sand. At low tide, rather large rippled salt flats arise, created by the flow of the receeding water. The image is basically straight out of the camera, imported from RAW and only saved as JPEG once (this version), so I don't think they're JPG artefacts.

Cheers,

Hugo

The scenery is indeed breathtaking.

There is a bit of a blur in the photo and I'm not sure if that is because of the 1 second exposure or if no tripod was used.

Like this. There does appear to be a little blurring, maybe camera shake. Well taken. John

Breathtaking is the word Hugo. Love the golden hues along the horizon line. Not too much fancy stuff in the sky which, in my opinion, can sometimes be way overdone (am guilty of that!). This looks so refreshingly natural. Very peaceful mood.

I think the problem with the foreground might stem from misaligned layers perhaps? It doesn't look like jpg artifacts or cloning misadventures or even camera blur. If you've masked layers here at all, then I'd say one of them decided to go for a wee wander ;)

Great stuff nonetheless.

Cheers
Rina.

Great photo,
love the depth, contrasting colors, sharpness and especially the coarse water. Certainly wall worthy.

That is a beautiful sight! The composition is good, they eyes scan back and forth across the image. Colors and lighting are superb! I too can see some strange markings in the foreground?

hi, it is a glorious scenic!...i like the darker contrast level for the grassy areas which define the forms well and is a good contrast with the reflective water...i like that vibrant green in the BG,too....good proportion of sky to sea/land
On my monitor i see in the FG some odd repetitive markings (bottom right as viewed...jpg artefacts?
regards,gayle
