It is absolutely a tripod lens. It does take great detailed shots. I have found that my better shots are under manual focus.

Pat, I am pleased with the 105VR, but would have liked a 200mm for the working distance aspect. It is significantly more expensive than the 105mm! I am sorry to hear that it is difficult to work with, it would seem to be a tripod lens - not so great for handheld shots.

Nice colors and sharpness. DOF looks just about perfect. I wish I could get more DOF with my 200mm macro. It's focusing is so touchy, that images are not always like I intend.

splendid detail on this macro floral. I think it needs a shave though as it is such a very hairy bugger. The colors are very lively. The angle of wich the stem comes is is super.

Thanks, Giuseppe! A geranium indeed and now I can find it in the guide book - it is a Sticky Geranium also known as Crane's Bill. If only the pictures in the guidebook were as good as mine! :)
