About This shot was taken on a very cold night in January, when my camera was so affected by the cold, that it got stuck at a shutter speed of 1/2000, in raw mode, and ISO 200 and I couldn't adjust anything. At least the flash still worked. It was in near total darkness, and I composed using the auto focus assist lamp. After a lot of work in Paint Shop Pro X, I was able to bring this image out.
I believe from it's size and colours it's a burrowing owl, although the location it was in contradicts this.

Hi Dave,

Nice rescue! I'm pretty sure that you have captured an Eastern Screech Owl. Burrowing owls do not spend any time in trees (as far as I know).

A rare and great photo!

Dave, you went to a lot of effort. I think it was worth it! It is neat to view.

Hi Dave, I think you are right about it being a Burrowing Owl. They are quite small compared to most others.
On another note, I wouldn't think the flash could do anything at 1/2000. It might have flashed, but it wouldn't have been synchronised, would it? I'm thinking that's why you had to do so much to the image in photoshop.

Came out so freeky Dave which added to the mood of the photo... excellent PS work my friend.
Good luck,

What a fantastic 'about' story to go with this Dave and what a great rescue of an image. You come from a country where the Mountie always gets his man and it appears that Canada breeds photographers who always get their shot:):) The eyes staring out of the dark are stunning my friend and I think you have a great shot out of a very difficult shoot. My very best wishes to you as always......Ray

Who, who. Sounds like you had lots of problems that night. It worked out pretty well. Don.

In spite of all that went wrong, I think the dark background tends to emphasize the eyes and give the whole photo sort of a spooky look. This would have been great to post at Halloween. I like it. Del.

I like how it came out, the shadows in the background are great and the expression on the owls face wonderful. Alison

All in all, pretty good Dave, considering the lighting and weather. You were good just to spot this guy let alone anything else. Well done. Nice work with the post processing.

Dave: I love owls. We saw some Screech Owls in Texas but they weren't as photogenic as yours.
