You sure managed to stay still for 30 sec. With those temperatures, I'd be afraid of freezing in that spot. The coldest I've been out observing is -7 C. It was cold, but there had not been many clear nights, so I just had to take advantage of it and get my photon fix. What a glorious time you must have had this night with that aurora show.

A great panorama, Gaute. You've allowed the aurora to stand out while leaving a dark hint of your presence, making you insignificant compared to one of the earth's most magnificent shows. This is really nice. Congratulations on the well deserved choice as Photo of the Day.

the sky with those liitle stars, like some diamonds on a azore velvety cloth is perfect! also those rocks and the snow on them makse a great contrast. but the most amazing thing is the sun in horizon!

The Aurora Borealis varies in structure, intensity, colour and time. This particular night it had an approximately 1 hour display. Unfortunately it wasn't very bright. My picture Aurora #3 shows this phenomenon at much more intensity.

So, how long did the Aurora last?

Paul Lara Paul Lara   {K:88111} 3/11/2006
Oh yes! And at that temperature, there is zero water vapor to obstruct this surreal intensely beautiful vision. 7+
