I'll be writing very short replies, and will try to do more critiques, as I find myself short on time these days, I hope you don't mind that I don't write as many thank you notes, unless I want to add or reply to a comment. Interesting remark about the Italian Renaissance, I'm not very familiar with the still lifes, anyway, I'm not trying to reproduce a style, but rather draw inspiration from the classics, in terms of objects, complexity, and arrangement.

Thanks Mark again, for your interest and support! I'm at my second session of still lifes here - "GEN 2" - as they say in the auto industry! Each one has been a learning experience, seeing what works and what doesn't, and where I want to take it. I'm pleased with the complexity of the still lifes, and will continue to do this. I'm planning to set an entire table with ceramics, silverware, fruit, vegetables, and bring some bread, cheese, and possibly odd objects, such as wooden jewelry boxes and jewelry. I don't think I can find insects - although I may collect dead butterflies in the summer. Flowers would be good too, so as soon as I can resolve the lighting problem, I'll go for the big complex still lifes.
Lighting is key to all this, and my biggest concern, one that I'll have to work on most.

Absolutely fanastic! I love it! You have a lot of objects here, as you say, and that is a good thing. there is so much interest that it is a feast for the eyes and defies a casual look. I find that I must dig into the details. The UF Panoramic feature was made for this sort of shot!! I'm so glad you posted the hi-rez via pano.
Where to start? There is so much to look at, and to like... I think the use of the opera glasses and the glass beads near the center of the composition was an excellent decision. They are very interesting objects and the opera glasses are a natural point of curiosity. It keeps the focus near the middle of this, which is where most of the objects are.
I like this arramngement. The area of greatest detail is in the middle part of the composition, which keeps me from wandering too much. The arrangement is quite complex, almost too much so, but the large scale of the picture itself seems to be able to carry all the detail. Also, some of the non-detailed areas (such as the cabbage and also the dark areas of background) relieve the eye from too much complexity.
I think I would like to see a larger more solid object in the center of the image. The horseshoe fills that role to an extent, as do the porcelain objects behind, But I'm wishing for a single larger simple object positioned somewhere in the center for the other smaller objects to play off of. A large squash, maybe. I don't know, maybe this is just personal preference. But I like a collected still life such as this to have a more voluminous object that all the others are sort of subbordinate to. So that the smaller objects flow visually out of the larger one. From the title perhaps you intend the horseshoe to play that role, But I don't think it's scale and shape of the horseshoe is imposing enough to dominate the other objects. Does this make any sense?
One small suggestion, the seedy pepper at the far left is stealing a bit of focus here. I think it is the light and the detail. You might consider darkening that area of the image a little bit using a new layer with a black-to-transparent gradient on it from left to right. You can then change the opacity of that layer to control how much darkening you get.
I like the unnusual fruits/vegetables you have chosen for this. It helps give the look of the old dutch work. The opera glasses also lend the period feel you are going for. All you're missing are the insects(!).
This is a fantastic still life, Ina, the best and most ambitious I have seen anywhere on Usefilm. Congrats on a fantastic work!!

This still life idea is full of great promise my dear Ina. You are using all the correct kind of ingredients and the layouts and croppings work well for me. It is going to be difficult to match the old Dutch artists who could utilise light and shadow from their imaginations. You, at the mercy of reality, will need to experiment with reflectors and diffusers. Keep it up though 'cos your first two compositions are still excellent posts with superb details and wonderful colours. Very best wishes to you....Ray

Beautiful still life, Ina, perfect quality and very nicely arranged. Seems to me a quotation of Italian Renaissance still lifes (as opposed to darker Dutch paintings). Unfortunately I have not had time to visit UF during the past months and I still will be busy till the end of March. Anyway, for this brief visit it was good to see your newest masterpieces. i really think i'ts time for u to try the way of light painting!
U love this kind of still life, and i'm pretty sure U'll make a pretty pretty work!!!
dark room, same setup of this pic, but long exposition and lighted by a flashlight on the right spots, so U'll reach the perfect dark taste of the old dutch painters...it will ROCK!!
just try it, u'll love it!

Well, I looked at this one this morning and I come back now in the evening. I definiteley prefer the first posting to this one. This is attractive, as well, but maybe too spread...or somewhere a lack of balance....though the colours are wonderful, rich and warm ,and the patterns so beautiful. There is definitely a great difference in the quality of the shot when seen in panoramic than when just opening it and looking at it on the "as is" position.I look forward to see many more of these creations!

In the end, I might end up assembling and shooting these indoors.
As much as I prefer pure sunlight, I'm lacking the control of having two light sources. A reflector would compensate for the dark spots, I'll see if I could set one outside next time :)

I like the colours and the lighting works well here, Ina! Perhaps a strategically placed reflector could serve to lighten up the background a bit without upsetting the rest of the image.

There is an easy way to get moodiness, by darkening the image, the problem is that the BG disappears and the objects tend to appear as if they're floating in the dark. I've lightened it quite a bit, from my original preference, so that the BG is visible. The other thing is to selectively lighten one area and darken others, which I may have to do. I'm going to post some B & W still lifes, I think they work much nicer in this respect.
I'm still in the experimental stages :)

Eye catching images, Ina! The elements are incongruous but then that's the fun part. The sun light on your balcony seems to be sufficiently filtered to soften the shadows and avoid harsh highlights. It is working out well in most respects, 'though I would eventually expect a darker and richer moodiness evoked overall. I have no idea how to get there! Best regards.
