About I was just about to go home disappointed that my first outing since going digital would be colourless, when the sky began to glow beautifully. This image was taken with a 3stop ND grad and circ. polarizer. Any suggestions regarding editing would be appreciated as I am new to photoshop. I wanted to adjust the levels to show more detail in the foreground but it blew out the sky.

Thanks Nacho, this was one of my first landscapes since going digital. The heavens opened up with the most beautiful sunset.

Colin:

Send this on to me and I'll take a shot at it. You can actually mask out areas you do not want affected using the full Photoshop versions from 7 on up to the most recent CS2.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your comments and advice. I've just had a look at your portfolio and it was great to see so many familiar sites photographed so well in a style that I am so fond of. I look forward to seeing more.

Excellent photo. I do like the colours in the sky.I have hoped for these colours everytime I go but seldom find them. Good thing you didn't go home too early. The GND filter was a good idea, and you could lasso the foreground and selectively lighten it to bring out some detail as I can't see much through the shadows. The eyes really are led away to the beautiful sky and I enjoy looking at this one. Good stuff.

Collin, this is an outstanding image. Gorgeous colour and a magical composition. I completely understand your frustration with levels, so this is what I'd do. There's probably a much simpler way, but here goes...

Start with turning the image into an editable layer - double click on it in the layers panel, then click ok to the dialog that pops up.

Then make a copy of that layer by selecting it in the layers panel and dragging it down to the 'create new layer' icon at the bottom of the panel.

With the layer copy selected, adjust the levels as you want for the foreground detail, ignoring how it effects the sky.

When you're done, click the 'add layer mask' icon at the bottom of the layers panel, then go over to the tool panel and select the gradient tool. Set the gradient to 'foreground to transparent' and select the Linear Gradient.

Now place the pointer about 2/3 of the way down your image. Click and drag upwards - in a straight line - to the top edge and let go. You'll see that you are making that section of the image gradually transparent. Repeat the click and drag until you're satisfied the unwanted area is completely transparent and that there are no obvious lines of the transition. It's a trial and error thing, so if you make a mistake, just undo and start again.

Lastly, either change the opacity of the layer to make it look more natural, or try playing with different layer blends.

Try it out and let me know if there's anything you dont understand.

Cheers
Rina
