I'm so pleased I stopped at the home page today, otherwise I would have missed your orchids. Beautiful work Tim, and thanks so much for your explanations. They are very illuminating! Now all I need to do is practice practice practice!

Thanks so much, Lily! Re: overexposure, I do underexpose by one-to-two stops to avoid burnout. The light for this was also very diffuse to avoid hotspots. High DOF was important here, but I then had to control the background. A significant underexposure with increased contrast in PS helped separate the subject from the ground. I hope this is useful. Thanks for your comment!

Explosion of color and such fine details. Long exposures indoors with very little lights yields me overexposed images. Is there a trick to this technique? I use f/32.
Beautiful shot!

Thanks so much for your appreciative comment, Anna. I think that the black-ground's contrast really makes flowers pop.

Wow. ..this one is beyond words, clearly surpassing even your PoD awarded photo, to my eye. The backlighting has brought a spectacular glow to the inside of the blossoms. The blue-hued highlights on the exterior of the blossoms shows the flower's incredible detail and intricately laced veining. A wonder of nature. Above all, you have gotten the lighting perfect here. Is it daylight? Use of the black mate cloth was an inspiration. I must try this myself sometime. Tremendous work, should be rated an 8 of a possible 7! A home run and a fave.

This one is as beautiful as the next awarded. You don't see me but I am very hoften visiting your home. I love floral pictures and yours ... I can't find an adequate ajective. Often I see nice flowers photos and I think: "I too will try to do it". But when I see yours I can only admire, feel happy and think nothing. Thanks.

Ooops! Now I see that you didn't cut out these two shots, but used the black background. I should have read further before posting my comment. This is beautiful also! Nicely done on both counts! Kathy

MAN - This is great! You have captured every detail and subtle color in the petals of this beauty. The lighting is just amazing. I'm mystified how you do this with such a long exposure without getting an awful look to the black background. I'm also curious about your light source as I see no shadows to really detract forom detail throughout. I hope you can fill me in on the technique.
Thanks Tim - Bill

Thanks so much for your comment, Jan. I think you are absolutely correct, that I did oversharpen this one. I was trying to compensate for the dulling effect that can occur with size reduction and upload but went a bit too far. Thank you for your honest opinion, and for your support of the image despite the technical flaws. I will try to upload a finer version.

Whew! Beautiful. I assume by natural light you mean window light? The lighting is superb. It really came out well. Very nice work indeed.

The colors and the lighting are strikingly beautiful against the black background. I do like the composition; however, on my screen the outer edges of the petals appear to be just a little oversharp. Of course, that could be a result of the light striking off of the thin edges of the petals and not due to oversharpening. I have had petal appear to be oversharpened when I haven't done anything to the photo except crop and size. In any event I really like this shot and can certainly picture it hanging on a wall. Color, lighting, and composition alone leads me to send this one to my favorites. Jan
