Hi Deniz, it's a legitimate question, Kathy Hillard asked me the same, and if you scroll up in this message thread you will see the original in color. I'm using sometimes the Canon's A-Dep mode, the camera automatically controls the depth of field to ensure that all the subjects covered by the focusing points, from those close to the camera to those far away from the camera remain sharply defined (are within the depth of field). I will post soon a barn with some tree branches in the foreground, and although they are very far apart all are in full focus. Best regards, Ina

Thanks for pointing out the color version, I had missed that. The color shot is interesting in how it shows the genesis of this image, but it's not special like the final image is. You have really taken this shot to a new level with what you've done. Great eye to see the potential in the original, a lesson on how an image can be transformed. It's so hard for me to see this sort of potential in an image, it's not something I've worked with very much. I need to experiment more! Thanks Ina.

Amazing DOF. Nice choice to desaturate this, though I expect it also looks nice in full color. The desaturation makes it a little bit starker and so makes the route sign popo a little more, which I think is important so that the signh and the background aren't in too much competition. Great choice making it a pano frame shape with the sign at far left. Great eye here, Ina!

I think that's a very nice landscape with abstract elements but I know nobody see those are. Therefore I try to describe it. First one the very famous plate from motorway with pretty designed formation. This beauty as curious children to stretch "I'm here", it's very funny and abstraction in one. The lines of electric pylon against the fine soft lines of background are very strong & exciting contrast. The top of mountains great silhouette & formations are very superb with creative fluffy cludy sky. Great composition full of interseting constrast and exciting tensions. Very well done dear friend. Hi Ann, that place is so huge, you can never see it in one trip, especially if you're taking pictures. On that trip my Canon Rebel decided to die on me before we got to DV, and I was left without a wide angle lens (:-O
My favorite pictures are those from the sand dunes and the ghost towns. Everything was shot with my 4 MP Panasonic, so I can't tweak them as much as I'd like.

I'm ashamed to say it but I missed all those places too Ina as well as Mesquite Flats and there's a really narrow canyon there that was closed due to flooding so I'd love to go back and see all those places as well as the waterfall that's hidden in there somewhere - takes an hour hike to get there. Not sure but it could be called Darwin Falls or similar name. Visitors Centre would know about that one. Did you go to Scotty's Castle? I really enjoyed that tour. There is so much to see in DV that even after multiple visits and all the places I have seen there is always more to see. It's just so vast it's mind boggling. Maybe I'll go with you when you visit. LOL

Hi Ann, Lots of fun to read your message! So there is a "lake" or a reservoir between the hwy and the mountains, and it looks like there is a railroad in between the hwy and the lake. On the map it is about 30 miles Soyh of Lone Pine. These old kilns were accessible from the hwy 395 side West of DV - picture attached:
Pet names for the hills! LOL! Nice place to hike - except in the summer, I guess. Maybe I'll ask Bob to have a look as well at this picture :) I'd love to go back to DV - especially since they've opened Dante's View Roadnow, because I missed Zabriskie Point which is a must for photographers. I also missed the Racetrack, so... I'm thinking of going back sometime :) Cheers, and thanks! Ina

Hi Ina....I wasn't saying that so you'd mention me in your "about". I was just letting you know that I know the area very well (eh - said in best Canadian accent).

I didn't know it until a few weeks ago but Bob and I lived in the same small town called California City. Bob is still there but I left last May. I was there for 6 years and for all we know we probably passed each other multiple times at the local drugstore.

The lake you mentioned is Lake Isabella. Have also seen that from every angle possible... aerial and road. There is a pretty little town up there called Kernville and has an interesting museum and a handful of neat antique stores to snoop through. I have a couple of aerial shots. I might post one some day. China Lake is the Naval Military Base in Ridgecrest. Seems a ridiculous name for a desert base and even more ridiculous for a Naval Base. (haha)

As for where this is exactly... you mentioned Charcoal Kilns but the only ones I know of are in Death Valley which isn't in this area. However, there is a large reddish looking hill made of cinder cones from an old volcano. You drive right by that on 395 on the way to Bishop. Maybe Bob could shed some more light on exact locales here. He always seems to be hiking these hills so probably has a pet name for every hill like "Heart Attack Heights" or "Breathless Beauty" or some such name. (hehe)

As for me...coming from a sea level home on the east coast of Australia I just about needed oxygen to live in the high desert at 2,500 feet where Cal City was... thus my personal pet names (as mentioned above) for those hills. Thanks for the ride down memory lane. It seems like years ago. Sometimes I miss the desert and all it's beauty... in particular the sky and sunshine.

Sorry this is so wordy. That comes from years of being a tour guide. (haha)

Hi Ann, I am soooooo sorry I didn't mention you, I had no idea this was your turf as well! Where did you live? And you are right, this is around the Ridgecrest area, somewhere between Barstow and Independence. What a great area and scenery! I have revisited my pictures and have some with a lake around there, and have no idea what lake that is, isn't that a shame? It was somewhere along 395N before the sands and the old charcoal kilns - maybe you can tell me? Must be China Lake, eh? (heh-heh, trying my best Canadian accent now). Anyway, I owe you one, just tell me which one would you like? A CA, an AK, or an icy shot from my neck of the woods? Cheers, Ina

Hi Kathy and thanks for your comment! This is a single shot, no layering - only cropped panoramic and selective PS toning and coloring - I am including the full frame below, I don't know how it's all in focus, but I assume the F10 did it. I shot this in JPEG, so I can't determine the focal points with the Canon software, I think that's only available in RAW? Anyway, thanks and have a look- this is the full picture untouched:

Hello Hugo, I love your comment, especially the "archetypal" part. It is "a highway" - despite of the mountain view, it is more, as you perfectly put it "about travel", about being on the road, being out there in the open space, absorbing the view, with music on the radio and (heh-heh!) ZZ Top goes with me, as much as does Bob Dylan and a few other "regulars" :) It's the immensity of the landscape, I don't know if you live in Holland or in America, but this is what strikes me about this continent - the hugeness of it, and the feeling of freedom you get while on the road. I have quite a number of empty highway shots, especially from that area of CA and Death Valley. Very typical, but still when I look at them it makes want to travel :) Thanks very much for your great comment! Ina

Hi Ina, Again such an interesting shot! The road sign near by, and it's placement on the left side creates an archetypal feel for travel and driving... The Kenny Loggin's feel... Highway to the Danger zone... I really like the toning here, with the resemblance of a glow in the dark sign (same era as Top Gun, if I'm not mistaken. As to the framing, just a wild idea, I think a rounded box would do brilliantly here, too, but the way it is is also very fine... A perfect filmstrip, and a great feel...

Onto a different feel, which fits the image also quite well... La Grange - ZZ top... Biker's galore, road side diners and lots of heavy thumping cylinders....

Very inspiring... Get's my creative vibes running again... Who knows, I just might be through with my series of postcards sooner than expected. It'll only take a few gentle shoves in the back....:)

Ina, Great symbol of California and the beautiful landscape varity along. One day I'll go big part of the HY, so far I know only small pieces here and there in CA but mostly in NV (in Carson/Reno area). Whetever it's great panorama view with a special focal on the east of Sierras comunication artery. Great in selective chromes. Cheers, n.j

Hey Ina, Bob and I were neighbours for years and didn't even know it until a few weeks ago. Small world eh (eh said in my best Canadian accent) This was also my backyard for 6 years. Have traveled up and down this highway more times than I can remember. I like the sign. That's a long highway and out in that desert all the hills start to look alike after a while so I can't say where exactly it might be but I'll take a stab in the dark and say somewhere around Ridgecrest area? Good one Ina and nice dedication to Bob. I'm sure he'll know those hills.
