About In an attempt to get an ultra-high resolution image I took (6) six images of this famous landmark and stitched them together. The very last bit of sunlight spilling over the horizon painted the scene red providing the unique coloring to the rock and mountains in the background.

Ann... I'm pretty certain this was (3) across and (2) rows (top to bottom). My memory is a little hazy perhaps this might have even been 4x2, but I don't think so. After a certain hour my brain stops working :) At a minimum 3x2.

Thanks for your prompt and in depth reply Jim. I can understand the use of digital for use with the computer and web presentation of such but I thought you wanted a high res quality for perhaps large format printing purposes. Having had a graphic design business in Australia for some years I can also undertsand the high cost of drum scanning. I have been putting forward some of these points to "die hard" film users trying to understand why people use digital sometimes and not others. In this case you have clarified well and answered my questions. Thank you. I do remember seeing another version of this scene posted by you at an earlier date so I'm guessing that one was a flim or slide produced image.

Oh one other question if you don't mind.....was this stitched horizontally as the image is portrait orientation cause if so that appears to have been quite the challenge? Again this coming from someone who hasn't delved into the world of stitching either so my understanding of it is quite limited.

Thanks again and cheers - Ann :)

Ann,

I had a film camera with me, but I opted to shoot this digitally and stitch it together because...
I could. It also lent itself to a couple advantages. The first being that I could selectively capture the scene with and with out people posing in front of the arch. I can instantly convert this to have a person in front or not based on how I took the image. The other major advantage was that I could have instantaneous access to the file to reshoot if necessary. The resolution of this image is higher than a 1ds Mark II which is often compared to medium format. The use of my work in online display and with digital printing yields better results when using a digital capture versus a film scan. I don't drum scan my images often and when i do it's quite costly. This was an economical way to avoid the drum scan. It was also an experiment. I'll have to check but I may have even taken this with film as well, but when the light wasn't so red.

Seamless work Jim and a stunning image but a question if you don't mind and please don't think me abrasive for asking but would it not have been easier to have taken photos using slide film (dare I say it - the old fashioned way) to achieve the high quality you were wanting? The question of digital vs film/slide has been in the forefront often lately and this seems like a perfect example of when to use which method and why. I understand the era we are living in is a high tech zone but sometimes the "fast" way doesn't always seem the easiest way to me. This coming from someone who can't afford to go back to film/slide as my technical skills aren't honed so I need the flexibility of digital to allow plenty of room for error and the luxury of hundreds of photos to find one good one in the bunch. Just wondering why someone with your technical know how and calibre didn't choose film/slide over digital.

Cheers - Ann :)
