I am FAR from being a Phototshop expert, but have played around with it a lot and know a little bit. The sharpening is probably the primary culprit in creating the halos, especially if the sharpening was excessive, though it seems odd that the buildings to not show the haloing effect, only the leaves. Once the halos are created, subsequent operations on the image might tend to accent the halo created by the sharpening. For that reason it's sometimes better to sharpen last, though some might disagree.

I do agree with you that leaving the sky a light color is not an option, the sky color goes a long way to making this picture work. And your PS work is 1st class as it is, and always done with flair and imagination. The huge time needed to master it is usually better spent with the art I think. Unless learning more PS is a fun undertaking, I don't think your need bother.

Thanks Mark for your in-depth comment! I tried here to give this image a 30's cartoon appearance, being consistent with the age of the building. The greenery halos are a by-product of successive color enhancements and sharpening, I assume - but I don't know for sure why this happens. Leaving the sky a light color could be a solution, although I'm not happy with that, or maybe learning from some PS experts how to avoid it, without having to go into extensive touch-ups :)

Nice shot. Your use of saturation of the late afternoon sunlight scene is appealing and also saves the shot from being commonplace. I like the vegetation on the right side as a textural contrast, though the halo around the leaves is a little distracting. Not enough to harm the shot tho.

The clarity! Divine colour and crisp lines. This is just beautiful Ina. You definitely have a PS gift dear lady :)

Boy, it's so nice to see your work on my screen. Doubt I would have seen the same on my parents dingy little monitor!

Thanks for your comment Gyuri. The Chrysler building is awesome in pictures but more so in person. My pictures were taken more than a year ago, but I thought they were boring, so I decided to post-process them and some I found were in need of a color boost (here I exaggerated the colors to make it look like a 30's comic strip) - and others looked better in B & W. Nothing in between :) Cheers, Ina

Thanks for showing me your image, Andre, I like it very much! I shall remember from now on the old building / sunset connection - thanks for the tip! Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 1/15/2006
Thanks very much Gabriela, it is an outstanding building to begin with. I got there around sunset, and the metal roof was glowing, and the buildings had already an orange tint, which I exaggerated to get that 30's Art Deco / comic strip look. Love, Ina

Hi Mark, and thanks for your comment! I do have a B & W version of the Chrysler building top that looks just like a huge syringe - maybe I'll post it if I can find some appropriate counterpart image. Which brings me to the format: I use square because the end result is larger, but now with the new panoramic format I use that too when I want to show more detail. Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 1/15/2006
Thanks Jeanette, I have a number of close-ups of the roof detail too, but it's too much to post at this time - it's in B & W with a blue cast, and it looks like a huge syringe :) Take care, Ina

I've noticed that you are frequenting square format images with really nice proportions within. You did a nice job isolating it so that the view is mostly gothic, starting from the Chrysler bldg. The colors are very appropriate in that it does get to that comic book appearance. It's more of feeling, a state of mind. I've seen it also in pure black & white. I guess it's all mostly in how the contrast and composition is manipulated.

Hi again Ina,
Here is the reason why I recognized the time of day. The light is just beautiful in late afternoon for shots of old buildings.

You must have had a nice trip to NY, dear Ina, enjoying some beautiful, clear sky. The Crysler Building is one of my favorites in NY, a grand example of Art Deco and your picture it is gloriously glowing. Thanks for sharing: Gyuri

You made the colours look so gorgeous and the building really shining!Though the building is old it looks so much like the head part of a spaceship. I like the vision and the framing within the shot. Beautiful!

Thanks Hugo for your comment, you always zero in on what matters! I find it fascinating too, to see how other photographers capture the same city. I guess we add to the pictures a lot of ourselves, in that we bring together with our cameras our ideas and points of view, even before we see the subject. Many times I find it's great to see what others have done before you, so you can get familiar with that subject.
I spent very little time taking pictures in NY; also, we had bad weather - very grey and dull skies, and rain - except for the last afternoon. So there isn't much I can post. B & W is the right choice for Manhattan, especially for the mood. Best regards, Ina

Almost looks like the backdrop on one of those special effects cartoons they have out now that are all computer generated. I can allmost see spiderman swinging of this building. Very nice warm tones. Saturation done to perfection. Not so much that it looks all weird. Great Job.

Hi Ina, I find your NYC photos fascinating, as it shows an entirely different view than I have captured, very intersting to see how different people also observe differently. My immediate feel when I set foot in the big apple was to get out my medium format camera, which is why I converted almost every digital image I took to a B&W square, having shot them with that idea in mind. For me, it captures the feel of the city, but looking at your colourised photos, I'm not so sure anymore. I'll have to go back to my images, and compose a triptych in colour, I'm afraid...;) This is striking, very good tones, bright and radiant, with a good deal of contrast. The black shadow on the left frames the image nicely, and does serve a purpose, but also reduces the "sqare feel" if you know what I mean. Just an observation, and a weird one at that, as it's only peripheral... Keep 'm coming, please! Very inspiring...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Ina,
This is nice, and I suspect the original is quite good too. I imagine it is in late afternoon light that would have a pretty good glow to it even before the PS work. Did you enhance what was already there or have you completely changed it?

Ina, it's amazing, the best of Chrysler Building I've ever seen and a distinct presentation of NYC. Colors are so great, the whole palette of warm tones from yellow, through orange and up to dark reds with the background of deep night blue - looks so cool. Great night shot of a famous architecture landmark well enhanced in PS. As good as yours always are. Cheers, n.j

VEry pretty Ina. I remember seeing this several years back and it almost took my breath away. It's so beautiful in real life. You've given it a new look here and it's really nice. I like this perspective with the older buildings and the foliage on the right to soften it. Great job.

Hi Ann, and thanks for the comment! I had these pictures for some time & I wasn't going to post them, until I got the idea to put them through PS. I wanted to distort this one a bit to make it look like a 1930's Art Deco poster, and I pumped-up the colors. Some sharpness was lost when I did this, the original is much sharper.
Cheers, Ina
