simple amazing... many times simple objects in good 'use' can give increadible results...and so here, just a glass, just a background and you get a superb abstract... complements!

I am repeating my comments here just to make sure you read it...

It is ammazing cooincedance that we have a lot of common photos.

If you notice, most of my work has one thing in common, it is WATER!

I like to photograph anything about water and it seems you like the same thing which end up that we do some similar experiments...

anyway, I enjoyed your work much, very much and I am still ammazed about the similarities between the 3-color-cups shots

Regards...

Ha ha! My own studio? No way! If you saw the setup you'd understand why this made me smile! I used a picture frame to support the straws and leaned it up against some books on my desk. It was all crammed into the tiny space I cleared among my papers. The lighting is from a desk lamp. All my shots are taken with whatever comes to hand at the time...

I like the way you did this with the straw behind the was and the lightning you used.

Do you have a own little studio or just having studio flashes and use what you have to make it work?

Hugo: there's something weird going on here, and it may just be a function of my screen. You've certainly enlivened the colours, but I don't get the same eye-bending effect. When I look at the original, I get a clear illusion of the straws moving. I believe this comes about through small movements of the eyes and the slightly different angles of the straws seen directly and through the glass. I don't really see why the colours should affect the illusion, although I can understand how the contrast between the light and dark could come into play. Anyway, it's got me fascinated in a new photographic concept and I'm sure I'll be playing with it again in the future!

Hi John, Agreed, it's all about the boosting of the colours and retaining the shadows. I've grown fond of the Shadow/highlight tool in PS CS2, it does just that. I've taken the liberty of fiddling around with it a bit. The shadow/highlight tool upped the highights beautifully, and I increased the midtone contrasts. With hue/saturation, I boosted the colours. Wonder what you think. Maybe I overdid it a bit, but it was a quick and dirty PS job.

Cheers,

Hugo

Fiddling with straws.

Hi Hugo! Many thanks for your comment. I agree with your observation on the tones, which is why I tried reshooting in sunlight. I'm still wondering how to boost the colours and retain the shadows, which I believe are key to the illusion.

Hi John, very intriguing image, i don't think I would've guessed it if you hadn't told us in the about. Excellent use of refraction; a physics teacher would really enjoy this photo, as it combines quite a few interesting theories...:) Won't go into that. I'll just sit back and be amased/wondered....:) I can imagine why neither B&W nor direct sunlight works as well as it does here. The lack of reflections is the key, I believe. Also, the colours do add to the appeal. Maybe the tones could've been a bit more crisp, but that's a minor thing.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Art - Happy New Year to you too!

It does work in B&W but the effect does not seem as strong. Also, I tried reshooting this in sunlight today and once again the effect is not nearly as strong. (The original was shot in articial light.)
