  Q. New to digital

Asked by George Dickerson    (K=26) on 6/17/2006
I have been photographing weddings as a hobbie/part time income basis for 11 years. I am self taught, and have used 35mm and 645 with much success. I am testing the waters with digital and am a veritable babe in the woods. Can any body tell me any books, web sights, etc, that would be good for beginners?

For books, I would suggest to check out your local library. I know from experience that they can be very pricey ($20 min). It will save you a lot of time and money to go check out the photography section. That's where I learned about the digital side and everything it entails.

Also check your local pro camera store. You can rent a digital camera and/or test out the different equipment as well as pick the brains of the staff there. They should know their stuff.

I am in the same place. Another good place is Half-Price-Books or a similar used book store in your area. I got several in the $7-15 range and you can normally return them for partial store credit if your finished using them, or donate to your local library and take the cover price as a tax deduction.

A digicam is just like a real camera with a lot more buttons you hardly ever use...

Just beware that the exposure latitude is extremely narrow, less than one stop for many of them, so your exposure needs to be spot on or you start loosing either highlight or shadow details or both.
It's even more critical than is pro slide film.
