  Q. Contax 645 alternative lenses?

Asked by William Wiseman    (K=0) on 9/11/2003
So expensive, the contax 645 lenses! So, has anyone tried alternative ones? - I notice ebay has listings of russian made or east German made lenses (have to use an adaptor)...
Zeiss Sonnar MC 180mm pentacon six mount is one such lens; and another is an ARSAT 55mm f 4.5 shift lens MC...
I would imagine you loose autofocus by using these, but really know nothing else about them... anyone with experience in this area? I sure would appreciate any information. Please post here or write wcwiseman@aol.com
Thank you.

William,

I don't have a 645 but I do shoot Ziess lenses on my Kiev stuff. The Ziess Sonnar is one of the sharpest lenes out there. I am attaching a shot taken with the 180. The Arsat lens is of less quality but still a good lens. You are correct that you will lose AF but you will also use coupled metering. You will need to stop down the lens to meter then set it again to take the shot.
