  Q. Slide/35mm/MF scanner
Howie Mudge
Asked by Howie Mudge    (K=27933) on 10/31/2008
I'm currently using an Epson 4870 for scanning negatives/slides and MF slides onto my pc via Photoshop.

Whilst this does an adequate job I'm looking more into purchasing a new scanner designated for slide/35mm so looking into some pointers on a designated film scanner rather than flatbed/slide/film scanner.

I don't really have the knowledge of what's hot or not on the scanner scene at the moment so any help with this will be much appreciated.

Also any information on extra accessories I might need if I go with a particular scanner again will be helpful.

Hi Howie

I use a Plustek scanner and I'm really happy with it. Almost all the film based images I've put on Usefilm have been thru this scanner.

Pros - Relatively cheap, has the highest dpi (7200dpi) of any scanner on the market, comes bundled with the highly regarded Silverfast software, can be used as a plug-in for Photoshop (though I don't), good (and fast) tech support.
Cons - It doesn't batch scan, it's a bit slow at higher dpi's

I'd recommend it

Regards, Gary

Hi Howie

The model I have is the 7200 which currently sells for around £125-£150. Here's a couple of reviews

Plustek also make a newer, 7300 model which sells for about £175, but I've no experience with that one.

Gary

PS I forgot to add that it really shines with 35mm mono negs

Thanks for all the help Gary. I've just purchased the Plustek OpticFilm 7500i SE (£226) from Amazon. Hopefully it'll be here sometime tomorrow and I can have a good play with it. Your help and advice as been very much appreciated.

Howie
