  Q. Photos for magazine?

Asked by Rhonda Studio    (K=20) on 5/10/2006
I have been asked by a local magazine to provide some pictures for a upcoming article. They've requested 4 or 5 different pics that they can choose from. They will only be usnig one in the article.

However, I've never done professional work before and I have no idea how to charge them. I don't have a clue . . . $10 or $1000???? I don't know . . . .

Can anyone give me suggestions?

Here's what I've been paid in the past for some various sized images:

Small (Less than 4x6) $100

Half Page (smaller than 8x10): $150

Full page: $250

Cover: $500

However, these are to one magazine that is known for underpaying photographers, and these rates are not indicitave of national mags... national mags would be 2-10 times the amounts listed above.

So, for a small local mag, I would say you are looking at $250-500 for a full page/cover, and then on a sliding scale for smaller images down from there.

Here's some advice:

- Ask what they typically pay for images at a given size.

- Send them lo-res .jpgs of the sample photos to use FPO (for position only).

- Set your rates and stick to them.

- Make sure they sign a contract stating the terms of payment (you set them ie: payment is due 30 days from date of publication, copyright notice/photo credit, one time single use in ______ issue, etc.)

- Report your freelance earnings to the govertment. They want their share.

If you have any more specific ??'s dont be afraid to ask.

Would all depend on the size of the printed photo, the circulation of the magazine, the relevance of the article (frontpage mention for example) etc. etc.

Price could be anything from $50 plus a free copy to thousands.
For the few photos I've solve, prices have usually been on the low end of the scale. Mags with circulation worldwide of a few thousand copies just don't have the money to pay more than a little bit.
As I don't have to make a living out of it, the exposure is nice in itself.
