It was indeed a format filling attempt and much of good luck to have the special color of leaves on the tree that ws staning behind the tree in the foreground.
YOur idea about the 16 different trees and backgrounds sounds great! I'll have to shoot a series on thbat subject first, since I don't have many of this kind yet. So, hurry up, Nick, and get out as long as not all trees have their new leaves yet!

Hi Nick,
A very nice shot here! The colour in the background is an excellent complimentary colour for the tree as the main subject.
I'm not going to say anything about needing space on the sides and bottom of the shot. It is obviously intentionally created this way, and that is fine. The symmetry works beautifully. Maybe a whole series of this kind of crop with different trees and backgrounds would look really good as one of those photo "quilts" (16 small square photos all presented on one canvas)

Many many thanks, Dave! Those colors of the background were indeed my good luck. They are the leaves if a tree that stands behind the one that is directly depicted. So, it "borrowed" me the canvas on which the one in the foreground was captured.

Thanks a lot for the nice and detailed comment, Annemette! I find it very nice too. This one is one of my more recent photos, after having excaped the state of simply shooting, and started reading, learning and being much more careful than I was. I am glad that you have the impression of a painting too, since it was my own idea, when I saw that the leaves of the tree on the background could be used as a kind of canvas. Which meant, wider aperture for getting only the tree in the foreground sharp and leaving the leaves as blurred as possible. This unfortunetely brought the branches of the tree in the goreground out of focus, that were extending considerably in my direction, but somehow they don't seem to disturb the overall look that much.

But I also had much luck to have another tree behind the one on the foreground, that still carried so many leaves. This way that nice color became a kind of canvas on which the branches with the snow could be captured this way.
