It's an inovative concept, a window-frost shot. I'd never seen it before. Contrary to other oppinions, I like the various colors and other natural effects. I like natural processes in natural images.

Yes you're right Jan, we should have gone through our last English winter and are looking forward to the move to Spain in late summer this year. As we will be moving inland rather than the coast we will be close enough to the snow covered mountains if we want to visit, but I'd much prefere to see them from a distance and of course in your photo's too! :^)

Thanks so much, Meg. I am sorely tempted not to fix the leak in this particular storm window just so I can have the frost and ice to photograph. As I recall you are moving to sunny climes and hope you happily leave the cold weather behind! --Best to you, Jan

I think the differences in the background colours add interest to this gorgeous shot Jan… I haven't seen frost like that since the nineteen fifties when we didn't have double glazed windows and central heating to keep us cozy. I hate the cold weather myself, but I’m the first to admit that something like this is worth being cold for. A beautiful shot!

Thanks, AJ. You describe pretty much what I am doing. Only difference is that if I go full res at ten mega-pixels, I cannot reduce the picture enough to get down to 400K. If I go the next step down it works, I just do not like the quality. I am wondering if the Adobe specific tool may not be good for this application and I might look for another tool to see if it is better. Thanks again, Jan

Further to the RAW / JPG debate: I have fairly standard procedures for handling JPGs that I believe minimise loss of quality. I use PaintShop Pro 9, but I imagine the approach would be similar in PhotoShop.
I shoot JPGs at the highest size and resolution possible on both the Nikon SLR (6MP)and the Casio compact (8MP).
I do very basic processing like rotating images using PSP9 lossless conversion.
Then I make any adjustments (cropping, colour, contrast etc) and save the image in a native PSP9 format (also lossless).
Finally, I making any further adjustments that are specific for UF. I first resize exactly to a size that will, once any borders or frames have been added, be a max height or width of 850 pixels. Then I add the borders or frames, before saving the file as a JPG with a specific compression rate that results in the largest file possible just below the UF limit of 400k.
May sound messy, but it all runs surprising smoothly. I'd be interested know whether I am in fact losing quality and not realising it.

AJ -- First, thanks for the great comment on my picture. I really appreciate it. I owe it all to a leaky storm window that, if working properly, would have not created so much frost on the window. As for the RAW, I still have and use it on the Canon Digital Rebel XT but do not have RAW on the new point-and-shoot. I have problems with the .JPG, being in lossy format, getting them down to the 400 K size for Usefilm and still maintaining quality. Still have not figured out the best resolution to shoot at. It is a ten mega-pixel point-and-shoot and I have a wide range of selections but still not sure what is best. In any event, I reduce them in size with the save to web option in Photo-shop CS7 but I am not happy with the results. If you have any advice on what resolution you use for shooting and what technique you use for reducing size that might help let me know. The RAW, processed at either 8 or 16 bit, never has this problem. --Best to you, Jan

Oh, this one rocks! It's like loads of little icy fern leaves! And the blurry colours behind provide a great backdrop. I don't mind that dense blue area, though I suppose a more even background might be more aesthetic.
AJ
PS. Reading through the comments reminds me that I really must try shooting in RAW. I haven't done so up to now cos of an influential online Nikon buff who claims "don't waste your time" (or the space on my cheapskate limited capacity CF card...)

The frost is gorgeous! Yes, the dark spot is mildly distracting but not enough to take away from the colors, shape and clarity of the frost. Looking at the color reflected in the frost you can tell it comes from the background object. Truly beautiful!

Wow, I don't think this is anything I'm going to see in my lifetime. Wonderful patterns, Jan, and to be honest the background colours don't distract me at all. If you want to get rid of them, would you be able to get lower and shoot upwards to get sky in the background, or is it important for your camera to be on the same plane as the window? Have you tried this with lensbaby?
Hope it warms up soon, but not before you've shot some more frost on the glass! Best of luck to you......

Michele -- I was asking about the file size setting on your Nikon (it is set up in the camera menus). You must have been referring to the upload size to USEFILM. The upload size to USEFILM is 400 K max with a maximum pixel dimension of 850 pixels per side. My question was aimed at finding an ideal resolution to actually shoot the pictures, not upload them. As for USEFILM having a different limit on different days of the week, I never noticed because I always stay within the limits that they specify for uploading. Never tried to beat the system. --Best wishes, Jan

I am glad You ask what happens on Sunday Jan. I think somebody else works at UF on Sundays or else I've just had some strange coincidences.... Thanks, Michele. You are confirming my thoughts on this as the highest resolutions of the new camera are too big and lose quality when I try to scrunch them down to web size for USEFILM. The new camera is ten mega-pixels and just too much in JPEG to get them small enough. I have experimented and found that the 1600x1200 seems to be working OK and so is the 2272x1704. Those above that size are just too big to crunch down. Thanks for getting back to me on this. What happens on Sunday? You get humble so you use a smaller size? :) :) --Best regards, Jan

Hi Jan, Yes I am using JPEG and every day of the week I get by with a resolution of 1280x849 except on Sundays... On Sundays I use 750x497 ... It's just the way it is... actually You should ask him..He seems to really have it down... --Best to You jan, Michele~

Michele -- Thanks so much for your nice comment! --Best to you, Jan PS: I have a question for you; on your new camera are you using RAW or JPEG format to transfer to your PC? If you are using JPEG, do you know what the resolution is from the camera (example 2496x1664 or 3546x2304 or some such)? I am trying to adjust my camera JPEG files to a reasonable resolution and am asking around to see what others are using.

Thanks so much for commenting! You are right, now that you mention it. It does have an "IR" feel to the colors.
