About Seeing as it was a waterfall image that got me in the front page as featured critique today I thought I'd post another photo of my favourite waterfall. This is another photo of the bridge at Multnomah Falls near Portland in Oregon. I know I've posted a lot of photos of this waterfall but it's got so many moods I just want to share them. This one was taken before it froze when it was raining. Enjoy.

Thank you to all who may take the time to view and comment on my images. I appreciate your support and encouraging words.

Cheers - Ann :)

Thank you for your kind words Sudhir. I think I have gypsy blood in me cause it seems like I've been travelling for most of my adult life. Most of my jobs have been tourist industry related so I've done a lot of travelling with my work but I think it's playing the keyboard on busy street corners on weekends that really rakes in the $'s. Who'd have thought street entertaining/busking/panhandling/playing music or whatever you call it where you come from could be so lucrative....and all tax free (haha - just joking really) :) If you'd like to sponsor my next adventure I will be more than happy to send you postcards of my progress along the way. (hehe) Thanks for dropping by.

Cheers - Ann :)

Whoa!! 55 comments!?!? This is no ordinary shot! Spectacularly controlled with the right speed and composition and perspective, for capturing the mood, water and the entire idyllic locale, all at the same time. Wow!! You are very modest for a Photog!! BTW, who fund$ your voyage$ from Land Down Under into all the fascinating corners of this planet?? LOL! Nice bumpin' into ye! :-)!

Another of your mediocre images Ann?

Really nicely done, well lit and composed. Maybe a tad too tight, but I don't know the scene and it's quite likely given your skills that this is the best composition given the surrounding terrain.

Thanks Dennis for your great comment. Yes I have 3 photos of frozen waterfalls in my portfolio here. 2 of them are of this same waterfall - Multnomah Falls. It's quite the sight to see them frozen. Go check them out if you like.

Cheers - Ann :)

You picked the perfect shutter speed to capture this beautiful waterfall scene Ann.
Do you have some shots of this area frozen or semi frozen? I'll bet it looks super moody on a misty/foggy day!

Great! Nicely saturated colours and the misty water curtains give the photo a very warm feel. Add the flowers framing the subject and the effect is to belie the ruggedness of the falls. Indeed another mood altogether! Keep them coming.

That works quite nicely Don. I thought about strraightening the bridge but I thought it might distort the falls too much so I didn't even bother trying. Attack of the lazies I guess. Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment and make the adjustments.

Cheers - Ann :)

When I look at this Ann, I see two people on the left side of this bridge. It took a while then realized that it was the rock. I thought that they were standing in the mist of the falls. I worked on the bridge a bit. Guess I just like to straighten things. Hope you don't mind.. Don.

Hi Ann, spectacular shot.... I just need to sit back and enjoy the view.... The bridge adds a special touch of interest, normally I'd consider it an undesired division of the frame, but here, it does show the sheer size of the waterfall. Great capture!

Cheers,

Hugo

You really do waterfalls wonderfully Ann! This looks like an image from Tolkien's Middle-earth, a fantasy world that may be more real than our own. Lovely colours and lighting and I really like the way you composed the shot, the way you've framed the wispy water with the bridge and the canyon walls. Don't apologize for sharing more pictures of this particular waterfall - I enjoy seeing the various and creative ways of visually exploring the same subject. I also noticed your winter shot of this setting - wonderful in its own way.

It´s a marvelous waterfall and very nice capture by it. The old bridge make such difference to the water in motion. When i browsed down and saw the other photo with another distance from the fall i think i like that one even more. Though i´m a fan of "close-ups" but the other was even stronger. BOTH are great!

Very well composed - beautiful landscape Ann. The only thing that bothers a little is the highlights on the bridge that seems a bit too strong. Darken them a bit and you have a winner. Great work.

Hi Ann,
I LOVE this...and can absolutely see why it's a favorite falls of yours...wow! I image the sound most of all here...has to be just deafening and WONDERFUL! I so envy your 'get up and go' and that you travel and see what you want to see :) Not that I can do it right now with the little ones, but I don't think I'll have it in me to travel as you do if I am ever given the opportunity...I would honestly love to see so many places, but I think I am lazy :(

Thank you for your comments on my images, especially 'bars & stripes' which I uploaded in haste....I was going to delete it this morning, but the site was down and when I came back to it there were already comments on it.....not too happy with it myself, but it stays :) I really appreciate your time & thoughts, Ann...cheers!

Oh goodie Ann. I spotted this so very early at work this morning but forgot that the internet programme we use denies me so much detail. I have waited patiently to say my piece and couldn't believe it when we were down for improvements.

This is so breathtaking sweetie and you have caught the image perfectly. There are times, many times, when sharp imaging is too clinical and the softer study produces the correct atmospheric mood. I likes a good drop of waterfall and this is it, fog, rain, shine or ice these shots are great of yours. Beautiful natural framing and bucket loads of details. Well done sweetie.. my clever girl Ann.. Best wishes to you and 'see' you again sooooon.Big hugs from Ray.

Yummy was the first thing that sprung to mind :)) I know, I'm a strange bird. But the image is sooo beautifully creamy. Funny Jim mentioning the softness as I had thought it your intention. Certainly adds a dreamy/surreal quality to the whole scene. If this is a technical error, then it's one worth repeating!

Thanks for your comment on "My Country". Now you have me singing it, only, the version I'm more familiar with goes: "I still call Australia, Rome..." :)))))))

Cheers

PS Ina....the best way to get a successful waterfall image, I have found, is to suffer for it...and yes getting wet clothes always makes for a better waterfall photo. (hehe) :)

Cheer - Ann :)

Thanks Ina, I have selectively sharpened before but I didn't even think about it with this iamge until Jim pointed out that the image looked soft and after looking more carefully now I'm thinking yes I guess I could have selectively sharpened just the bridge and still kept the rest soft. I guess I didn't look that closely at the image before posting it. This image pretty much was straight out of the camera this way apart from a slight bump in contrast and that was it. I didn't even crop it.

I guess you lot are really keeping me on my toes. Thanks again. :)

Cheers - Ann :)

PS - Ann, with regards to sharpening, I discovered that you don't need to sharpen the entire picture. You can select one area and sharpen just that portion, while everything else stays the same. Ina

Thank you for taking the time to view and comment on this image Del. Yes it is the same waterfall as the frozen waterfall. It's called Multnomah Falls and has a drop of 620 feet. This was taken a couple of months ago when it was raining and foggy. I have taken hundreds of photos of all sorts of angles and variations of this waterfall cause it's the prettiest waterfall I've ever seen. I posted an attachment of the full falls taken on the same day in this thread and I also have it in my portfolio. I just thought this made for a different variation but obviously the full falls are going to be more beautiful.

Thanks for dropping by and for your valued comment.

Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ann, As I commented on your FP feature, I asked why you had no new posts, but you do! I'm glad to see you back! Great close-up of this amazing waterfall and bridge. I love the composition and the great foliage colors. The water looks like a thin veil. It takes a lot of skill to shoot waterfalls, I tried many times and haven't posted any. You have the magic touch, and the soaked clothes to go with it :) Best regards, Ina

Ann Nida Ann Nida   {K:45248} 1/24/2006
Thank you for taking the time to view and comment on this image Jim. I did notice it was a bit soft and I tried sharpening but afer I did that I preferred the softer look as I thought it suited the theme a bit more....kind of a yesteryear type of atmosphere. I have posted photos of this complete waterfall in the fog and rain and when it was frozen. They are in my portfolio but here is the larger version of the full falls taken on the same day. It was raining and foggy that day thus the misty softer appearance again.

The falls have a 620 foot drop so even with my widest angle lens I was hard pressed to get it all into the photo. I just thought this shot made for another variation of the same falls.

I'm afraid I may have gone a bit overboard taking too many photos of this waterfall but it's one of the prettiest waterfalls I've ever seen so I took hundreds of shots of all angles and variations and different seasons. I'm posting my favourites here.

Thank you again for dropping by and for your valued comments.

Cheers - Ann :)

Beautiful colors and slow shutter speed. I would love to see this with a shorter focal length to see more of the falls. The bridge looks a little soft. I wonder if sharpening the file would help or if the original was a little soft. What is your assessment of the sharpness?

  0

Del Metheny   {K:25617} 1/24/2006
Is this the same waterfall and bridge you shared with us about a week ago when it was frozen? I loved that photo. It is nice to see it now in warmer weather to compare. If it is the same bridge and I am allowed to vote I will vote for the frozen verson. Is there a viewing stand of some sort where you can photograph from? Where ever you were standing it gives a wonderful perspective to you both of the photos. Del.
