What!
No calculating exposure from the luminescence of the moon because you could'nt find your light meter? You could'nt make the second exposure because the light fell off the crosses? Where's the drama in that?
Just kidding. Great work!

Stephen, Steve and Ron:
Thank you very much for your analysis and reactions. They are encouraging and stimulating!
I had a LOT of fun executing this piece: I was driving along with my wife and kept thinking what striking patterns the cracks made in the pavement! Then I'd think that my wife would flip if I stopped and said I was going to walk out into the middle of the road and start photographing the pavement! Then a few more miles would go by and I'd think the same sequence all over again.
Finally I decided to pull over ... then I started laughing and couldn't stop! When I finally stopped laughing and told my wife what I wanted to do, she did FLIP! But after a while I convinced her to watch for traffic as I wandered along ... fortunately there wasn't much going on, so in about five minutes I had these pictures taken and was on my way.
Anyway, been wanting to tell someone about the history of this photograph ... :>)

Hi Joffre,
Just spent an enjoyable hour or so viewing your portfolio and your web site. Thank you. Don't know how I missed your work before. If you ever have a show anywhere near L.A. please let me know so I can attend.
This is very, I don't know if nice is the right word, in a Minor White'sh, equivalent sort of way. I'm moved.

Nice cloud studies. They seem to follow each other, from left to right, going from thunderstorm to a bit more friendly weather.

Chris & William,
Thanks for the comments, glad you found the photo intriguing and that it worked as an abstract. My tastes definitely veer away from the familiar allures of most photographers, and have till now been firmly ground in landscapes and abstracts. Glad to find kindred tastes ...

If this is a Banyon tree, I'm going to complain to the society for the protection of banyon trees for the terrible things you have done to it's roots. If it's a mangrove you are even in more trouble. In any event, a very interesting study. Like some of the real images I post, this is potentially ignored because it doesn't have a familiar female shape. Excellent work, congrats.

Hi Joffre,
Great shot - the thumbnail made me think "what on earth is that?", and so did the shot until I read your comments. Great abstract therefor, an image that grabs the attention and intrigues the mind.
Chris.

Joffre,
I think your highlight detail is just perfect, which means that you need to somehow fill in the rest of the image with more light without pushing the highlight up further.

I think some of that could be acheived in printing or in development, but more light would make this perfect.

Roy,
I agree with you about the 1/2 stop ... I had a small white reflector shining into the bottom half, but it wasn't quite enough. I should have bracketed ...

Such a nice simple composition. I imagine that the print is much more magnificient than this appears. Nonetheless I think a BIT more light (say 1/2 a stop) throughout the image in the non-highlight areas would really help it.

Great image, but I wish the contrast was a touch lower so that the lower half was more visible.

I love the strong lines on this picture. Also use of a red filter has made the sky nice and dark. I really must try some coloured filters on my Black and White attempts!

Hello, Stephen!
As indicated, this was shot with B&W film, which I then had developed as a transparency by the dr5 method (I really love the output of this method, but it's too expensive generally for my work).
After scanning individually and doing level, contrast and sharpening controls in PS, I put together this composition and used PS's duotoning feature. I don't offhand remember if this is a duo-, tri- or quad-tone.
I have found this feature to be most useful in helping to transmit a subtle sense of mood in certain of my B&W photographs.

This is a beautiful composition. A wonderful photograph that works well as three concepts. Love the look and feel - the tone is great. Please tell me how? Did you use color paper - black and white negative?

Digital darkroom is almost as good as the real thing!

Great shot Joffre. Your photo makes me dream of the days in the future where I may see such plants myself, and perhaps try a shot like this.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the kind remarks!
After scanning, PS was used to increase contrast globally, then certain shadow areas were burned-in and the tree trunks slightly dodged to further manipulate contrast locally. Some slight burning in of canopy. Otherwise, no changes to scan.

Steve,
Thanks for the compliment! As for similarities to Clyde Butcher, I'm sure that it's limited to the fact that both of us shoot in Florida! He does some really cool stuff which I've admired for some time.
