now, now, TM.... whatup with the politically charged stuff? although by the looks of the neighborhood, i'd have to guess that the voters there would primarily be dems. every uncast vote is effectively a vote for the incumbent? doesn't this inherently hurt your cause? ;^) kerry's communist leanings aside, this is probably one of the reasons why they lost!

sorry buddy, i couldn't help it ;^) just ribbing you a bit...

take care,
tom

jim, very nice graphical composition using such distinctly different textures and colors. bushy bumpy grassland, flat harvested field, rolling hills, steep foothills. the saturation bump deifinitely makes it pop. beautiful vision.

baki, excellent symmetry! almost abstract. sort of looks like some sort of mechanical claw. great shot!

bobby, excellent photo! great idea to tilt this. it adds a whirling, almost vertigo-ish feeling by introducing curves on all the surfaces, esp. the close ones. gotta love them fisheyes ;^) i also like the almost monochromatic look. did you desaturate it at all or was the hallway this general "color"? just curious....

btw, sorry for the late response. like you, i've been extremely busy lately and am just now trying to catch up with UF.

take care,
tom

baldacci, very cool! almost surreal. the trees appear to be miniatures placed on an astroturf field. i love it. excellent composition!

tom

ps - thanks for your comments on my shots a little while ago. i appolgize for the late response but i've been very busy lately and have not been able to respond as quickly as i would like.

arwa, very nice! love the dark foreground offset by those beautiful post-sunset hues in the sky. two things make it for me: the motion blur on the children playing and the moon perched above them like a guardian. very well done!

take care,
tom

ps - thans for your wonderful comments. much appreciated.

william, very cool! i really like your composition and DOF. the oily grit, dirt and fibers on the teeth seem 3D. you certainly get the feeling that machine is used frequently and yet the tones impart it a sense of melancholy. of being once useful and yet now forgotten. excellent work!

tom

hugo, just got back from a long stint at work and decided to check out what i've missed. upon opening your page, this image just jumped at me. i'll get around to the others soon, but i feel compelled to comment on this one. how very, very unusual for you. i don't think i could've picked this one out as one of yours as the style is very different. onwards....

what do i see? a chromed mechanical hand (very much in the style of the cop in T2) rising from the sludge wherein it was forged. knuckles glowing orange. fingers flexing for the first time as they emerge from a mercury bath.

when i open it, i notice it's not a newborn mechanical hand at all, and yet it is a baby. your "new" baby. congratulations are in order.... for your new citroen (how is she, btw?), for the incredible shot (which i have yet to figure out how you shot it), and for the SC. excellent work! i love this one and it's going in my favs list.

take care,
tom

right on, patrick! you managed to find badwater in a state that does not occur very often. with actual water ;^) a very unusual sight and expertly captured. i love your composition with that salt growth in the lower fore as the saltpan stretches out into apprent infinity. all the while my eyes are guided by the curve of the water. i hear it calling me again....

bummer you didn't get a better sky as the clouds out there tend to severely increase the wow factor of most vistas. what day where you there? i was there on 10/2-3 and managed to get a nice shot from the boardwalk. went back on 10/30-31 but it was very hazy due to the recent rains and we didn't bother to walk out on the saltpan even though we could see plenty of water on the west side. we ended up shooting from the devil's golfcourse instead but i'm not entirely happy with the results.

can't wait to see your other shots from this amazing place. take care,
tom

ryan, cool! unfortunately, i'll be in california on the 27th. will it be visible on the west coast? i assume not since it'll be 6:15pm PDT and moonrise won't be until 9 or so. is that right? i would really love to shoot this event again. in any case, good luck! at least i'll have your shots to look at ;^)

all, thank you so much for stopping by and taking a look-see and esp. for all your kind comments! and thank you, site admin and UF, for all the awards esp. the EC and all the frontpage exposure. i appreciate it immensely and am extremely flattered. i fully intend on thanking everyone individually but i've been out of town for the past few days so it may take me a while to get around to all of you.

thank you all,

ben, thanks for your comment. long exposure noise reduction is a feature of the D100 and other DSLR's. the concept is that when you are shooting a long exposure (slower than 1/30), the camera takes a picture behind the closed shutter and determines where noise is bound to appear and creates a "noise map". this noise map is then superimposed on the actual photo you take and used as a mask to remove CCD induced noise. hope this helps.

tom

tm, 500+ views and only 2 comments? interesting. i must admit, i'm partially at fault as well. i have actually viewed this one several times but it is so good that i really didn't know what to say. i presume this was also the case with the other 500+ folks who opened it. i'm not sure who alfred wegener is (enlighten me, please) but i'm extremely impressed. it has an ethereal quality that speaks to my innards. great idea and very well executed!

tr

hugo, this is my favorite of the spider series. the angle you chose is so unusual that it is captivating. seeing the spider from our horizontally dominated perspective is very interesting. it looks as if ready to pounce on some unseen prey. tension in hugo-speak ;^) great job with the fill-flash. it gives the critter a nice glow, demanding attention, as well as bringing out it's web. i dig this one a lot!

very nice, amna. beautiful composition! i'm not sure how much of a curve there is there but i wonder what it would look like with a wider lens. i really dig the little gargoyles along the edge of the roof. very well done!

steve, wonderful composition! very moody. i can certainly see what douglas is saying. the shadows are a bit strong. if we follow the rules, he would be correct. however, i can also see why you broke the rules and did it anyway. and let me tell you, it works! excellent photo! i esp. like the similarity in disposition between the cloud and tree. very well done!

bren, mother nature giveth and she taketh away. i empathize with you. there are places out there that are tailor made for sunset conditions and yet they are obscured from the spectacle. still, you did an excellent job. i think i can see what it was you were looking for. perhaps a warming filter would've helped nudge it in that direction. the only other option (that i can see having never been there personally) would be to shoot this from the other side with an ND grad. that way you could have the spires against the sunset colors. wonderful photo, regardless.

klaas, wow! the simplest subjects sometimes make the best subjects ;^) the shallow dof you chose makes this look detached and otherworldly. i feel like i'm on another planet. the strip of sky is an excellent touch which adds to overall mood. wonderful photo!
