Very catching photo because of the contrast grave - flower. Good composition. Maybe I would use a little more contrast or an unsharpmask filter.

Your Srebrenica series is very interesting Cas. I saw your portfolio and I really like it. I'm not sure if you live here in Bosnia or you just visited, but you might want to check out photos by Zijah Gafic, award winning bosnian photographer who won three World Press Photo awards, among those two for Srebrenica photos. Currently he has his exibition here, called Aftermath, collection of photos form Srebrenica, Palestina, Iraq and Rwanda.
Best regards Cas,
Amer

I don t find the great tragedy in this photo. I suggest to catch details rather then panoramic view.

I'm wondering how it would look had you lowered the camera to their eye level rather than pointing downwards. Interesting photograph. Their being in the center of the frame gets you to look at them more intensely. I don't like how her elbow merges with the white piece of cardboard on the ground. Just a minor one, though. The elements in the background are fragmented; in other words they aren't shown in their entirety, which in my mind is kind of symbolic of that torn and divided region of the world.

My first thought even as I looked on the thumbnail was that she's too close to the edge of the photo; I'd like to see more room in front of her face.

As for the lighting, I would really prefer if she had a single catchlight in each eye, rather than three her left eye and none in her right eye (or maybe there is one but it's hidden behind the strand of hair).

Is there any particular reason why you chose Delta 400? I generally have nothing against grain (in 35mm I shoot ISO 400 films almost exclusively), but in a portrait shot like this I'd expect smoothness of the skin to be one of the objectives (Acros 100 from Fuji would be great for this).

Cas, Here's a comment or two on the lighting... First, the overall impression is one of flatness. Side to side, the lighting is similar and equal - perhaps your goal? The subtle shadows (on the wall) create a point of interest (at least for me). Also, the tones of the wall (background) and the subject seem to blend in. Perhaps changing the tone of the wall (either white or darker) would help here. All in all, a good shot. Keep working at it, I'm sure you'll strike just the right lighting in no time at all. Cheers! Sam

Cas, the image caught my eye so right off that tells you something. It is composed well and I like the contrast. She's lit well from the front but as you can see there are some shadows being cast on the backdrop. Perhaps mover her forward some if you have the room. This way the shadows, if there are some, won't be so close around her. You can even create some drama with the shadows if they are farther from her. Good luck. You have some very interesting shots in your portfolio. You have a good eye which is more than half the battle.

While the differences are small, I think I prefer the previouse version where she was looking into the lens. There she really made an eye contact. Here she stares a bit into the nothingness.. Technicaly a nice shot though..

This is one that I really love Cas !!! The idea is very good, the use of DOF is good, but I have a bit of a hard time determining if her eye is in full focus, if it is, then that is great. The lighting is very good too, very soft, and there where I think it should be. The framing is good, but I keep having the idea that you should've shifted a little to the right, so that you have exactly the midle of her nose and lip, and her whole ear in the frame.

Hey Cas, the softness of the picture has a flattering effect on this portrait, I like it, I don't at all see it as a handicap or bad thing, in this picture. Regarding lighting: it is a bit overexposed as Ciprian said, but again, I like that here, high key is nice for portraits sometimes, here it works I think. The face is also evenly lit, no harsh shadows. Her eyes could use a little more light maybe, so that the iris would come out better.

The crop is great, the touch of grain works very well. I like the composition and if you want to hear it or not, the girl is beautiful with great and expressive eyes. The only minus is that she seems to stare a bit. I feel there's some tension around the eyes like she had to keep them open for to long. . But the result is wonderful. Great shot..

Hi Cas,

If you wanted to achive sharpness, sorry you haven't got it. But this shot is perfect as it is, if it were mine I wouldn't change a thing about it in that respect.

Slightly overexposed I would say... but a very good portrait.
