It's kinda a fun shot, here is this 144 year old ship docked next to Pacific Coast Highway in San Diego, you can see the parked and moving cars near the bottom. The sunset looked pretty, very colorful. I was originally just going to take the sunset shot...but I was walking near the Star of India, I thought I'd get that instead. The crepy clouds and neat colors just made the ship look kinda eerie. I would love to catch the same shot out on the water somtime. :)

The Star of India ship is the world's oldest active ship-began her life in 1863..bought and taken to San Diego in 1926 for restortation. In 1976, the fully restored Star of India put to sea. She is now part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and yes, they do still ail her. :)

Great tips! I have a handfull of sunsets/rises that I have taken-most often while on my train ride along the ocean, home from work.

This one took while riding in the SkyTower capsule at SeaWorld-up more than 265 feet, as the capsule turns. This is a shot looking toward Mission Bay.

I work as a sound engineer, and I have done some lighting design at some gigs at school...so I am always attracted to concerts. Sometimes (when they let cameras in) I take photos of cool, or simple, lighting at other shows to keep as a example to remember to try on stage sometime, which was the case of this picture. The result in the photo form looked as cool as it did live. Very simple lighting here, but the colors were well balanced and interesting.

Thanks. I'm surprised I got this (or any of these with Spike) shot at all, it was windy and the branch was blowing all around..It was taken in the morning-about 8:30am. The great bright San Diego sunshine was perfect lighting too. :)

You know, sunsets have become so cliche over the years, but I personally never tire of them. As a newbie to photography a while ago, sunsets were the first thing I wanted to tackle. In fact, I have a couple I took in 2005, here: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?ID=92490&PF=24527 When I compare those to what I did only a year later, I'm amazed at how much I achieved. Yet, I have much to learn still.

Some things I've picked up along the way are:

Sunsets (or any other land/sea scape) will have more impact for the viewer when the sky colours and clouds (if any) are dramatic;

Sunsets over sea in particular, need something in the foreground to anchor the composition - land, boats, rocks, jetties etc. The viewer needs to feel totally immersed;

Use filters. Polarisers and Neutral Density filters are a fantastic investment - this won't help you right now, but when you decide to move on to a dSLR, you'll want these;

Experiment. Sit yourself down somewhere picturesque, and if your camera allows it, switch to manual control and experiment with different settings. Take as many pictures as you can. Try everything.

Awesome silhouette Aly. You did really well given the low light. Would've been great to have isolated this baby out on the water I'd imagine.
