Alyazia, hey thanks for the comment. I have hardly had time to get on here at usefilm lately. I just graduated a couple weeks ago and then moved to Massachusetts. I'm doing volunteer work with Heifer International, and still doing lots of photo work, unfortunately, without access to a negative scanner for the time being. i'll try to get something together and get posting before too long. thanks again, curtis

very strong composition and nice overall presentation. one suggestion would be to burn out the small gray details in the top section. This neative space could create a more interesting form without the variation in value. It would also pull forward the lighter tones in the bottom section. regards, Curtis

Thanks, I appreciate the comments. Sometimes I wish I knew the scanning, PS, and posting a lot better, but my real focus is in the darkroom where with closely shot images like these I can pull out textures and lots of tones. nice work here and definately comes from the heart. it'd be nice to see a little more in the skin textures, but either way, strong idea and presentation.

one of your best works so far. very nice job. the simplification of subject matter and composition are very strong things to do. the textures of the sand and the monotonous hue vs. the warm red really pulls the berry forward and dominant. nice job here.

Nice work here. I think both the color and bw versions are quite strong. The bw version is less clear and understood, more abstracted. The color version works well because the simple color hue. Nice job here.

thanks for the interest in the images. this is part of a large series, trying to get people to think and look beyond the aesthetic values seen. i have tried to create something i find aesthetically and formally pleasing, while at the same time having a conceptual meaning, a deeper though or commentary beyond aesthetics. the ideas can be interpreted as the viewer wishes, and in art i feel it is not the artist's responsiblity or right to say exactly what something means, as many people can interpret it in their own ways. so yea, to me, this has been much more than just shooting things, it's taken thought and time to decide what i'll use and how to present different emotional states and ideas.

Alyazia, yea i put the hand print there first with the glove and then dropped the glove next to it in the snow. as for the contrast, i'm not sure exactly what it looks like to you, but the original print is a high contrast print. today i'm on a different computer than normal, and the image looks low contrast, so i may need to calibrate my screen i've been posting from. thanks, curtis

Gabriella, gracias por tus comentarios. no hablo el italiano, pero puedo hablar el espanol, y entonces, espero que puedas entenderme bien. es mas parecido del ingles. tu tienes un porfolio muy interesante con muchas tipas de fotos. me gustan los colores aqui, pero la composicion esta demasiado por la derecha. este lado tiene la cerra y la subjeta, la chica. el otro lado no tiene nada de formas y esta abierto. con la chica por el otro lado, podria tener una composicion mas fuerte. bien hecho con tu portfolio y gracias. chao, curtis

nice work here, very abstract and non-studio sense. the play of the light and the textures on the wall are especially nice. it's too bad you couldn't expose a little longer and pull some more textures from the wall, but nice job.

thanks for the comment. this image has a very strong play with figure/ground and the pattern of lines really pulls it out. the lines also frame in the two images and create an abstract sense of space relation. nice work here.

thanks for the comment, i appreciate it. although you don't have much to show yet, interesting portfolio and it looks like you have a good photographic eye. nice use of alternative camera angles and perspectives and compositions. it would be difficult to get right, but it'd be nice to see a stronger focus on the web going across. either way, nice light capture and the lines of the web give it a dramatic effect.

thanks for the comment. in this case i cropped as i did trying to split the negative space from the top, creating forms rather than an open line and unending shape. it would be interesting to see the piece cropped more loosely, but until i reshoot this isn't possible, i try to do as little PS changes as possible and post as shot. thanks for the comment.

thanks for the comments. one of my goals here with this series has been to take some of the ugly aspects of the modern world and soceities and to present them in an aesthetically pleasing way. kinda an oxymoron, beauty through the not so beautiful aspects of life.

Thanks for the comment. It's nice seeing younger people being involved in photography and doing a nice job with it. Interesting portfolio. The thing I would stres the most is experimenting. This shot and some of the others have a more experimental and abstract sense to them, a different perspective, not just a turn of the camera, which appears as a process, less important than the end result. looking at other art is a great way to expand, which this site really helps, but looking at those who have brought photography to where it is really helps. nice stuff and keep shooting.

another thought provoking comment, thank you. i agree with you here. modern science is too powerful to be stopped, and it shouldn't be. i am no proponent of a regression to old traditions, although i think in many ways the world is regressing, but i do realize that all science has its cost. just as we have seen in history, science will work to solve some of our greatest problems while creating new and more dangerous ones. our unstoppable quest for new knowledge and discovery causes this to continue. i don't like governments or people of authority trying to rule what people or science do, which leaves just morals and conscious to keep things in check, which sometimes i question.

thanks for the great comments Mark, quite conceptual and deep. i recently began this series using eggs, both due to the great textures and tones you can find and as part of a larger message, something more complex. i am enjoying these series quite a bit and find the egg quite a fascinating subject both physically and conceptually. a representation of life, actual life, life to be that is either achieved or destroyed with a mere crack by a hand. cool stuff.

It's interesting viewing the two versions. This one presents a different emotional quality, with much more warmth due to the color tones. the other is less forward, and more thoughtful. i like both versions myself, just different emotional qualities due to the lighting and tones.
