Critiques From Kelli Evans

Great angles/ perspective! For that, the arm doesn't bother me so much- I can't focus on it because my eye is drawn up to her face by the legs from one direction, and the arm from another direction. The arm may seem a bit strange, but it makes sense in the image- I think if you removed it/ put it beyond her she would appear off balance- falling toward the front of the frame....ALTHOUGH...that could be kind of cool with this composition.

Excellent use of depth of field- my eye repeatedly cycles down the line. Great tones!

This is very refreshing- not just another macro photo of a flower- the composition is excellent!

THis image was better recieved than I anticipated it would be. It's getting to the point in this series where it is more difficult to decide what to post next. I can be overly critical becasue I've looked at them so many times- I lose interest. It's wonderful to get other people's perspective with a fresh eye. Very Helpful! Thanks!

I love the colors and the composition! In your work in general I really like the pallette you choose and the tight cropping. Great work!

Excellent use of the black space! I love the way the "leaves" come into focus- like they're raining down. I also love the subtlty of the light on the stem- how it defines it, as opposed to the lack of detail in the top of the frame
(I'm assuming all the leaves are attached to the stem- although that was not my initial thought) but the focus of the lighting makes them seem like separate entities. Very well done.

Thanks for the feedback- I see what you mean. And I was not offended by the "nude Helen" comment- I had to chuckle .

Why do you think it won't be well recieved on it's own (I'm not being defensive- I really want to know- I debated posting it)? The series is quite extensive- a little insight since you've been following it: When I was 7 the woman who lived across the street from me was named Helen. We collected several antique dolls in varying states of disrepair with the intent to take the good parts of each and reassemble them in to "restored" dolls. We only finished one doll. Helen died shortly there after. I carried around these doll pieces and parts for 20+ years and through almost as many relocations. I used them to illustrate the fragmented nature of my own childhood memories (hence the cropping and heavy shadows). This is a theme that has influenced my work in varied ways for the past 10 years. What I was trying to do in this case however was to take the fragments and appreciate them for what they are, instead of concentrating on the voids.... in a nutshell...

I am usually not interested in scenic photos, because something is generally lost in the translation (trying to do it better than nature itself) BUT, this photo is fabulous! You've really captured a perfect moment!- despite the noise even (how many megapixels is your camera?- is the noise a result of that?)! Well done!

I love the textures- the ridges in the fingernails, the fraying thread- how does it look with a little more contrast? or in color?
