wow........ such an atmosphere in there........ fells like i'm looking at one of those paintings of the dutch golden age, the close scrutiny of the natural world but with that little extra due to the modern photographic camera's way of seeing............ really brilliant - no pun intented there - and what's even more fascinating is that it seems very consistant throughout your portfolio...... very interesting indeed!!

entering a different world there....... still mastering the (difficult) light and your b&w pics are undoubtedly top class but i think it lacks the poetic touch i've felt with the pinholes........ but obviously a different approach can only give a different result........ this means i think that i have a slight preference for the pinhole series!

funny cos i was just about to say the same (thanks for the compliment btw)........ for as you seem to create an imaginary yet so familiar world by the light you find......... fascinating indeed!!

hi franck,
i've just had a quick look at your website (loads of interesting stuff there btw) and, to be honest, i can't help but thinking of the ultra famous brit painter draughtsman printmaker photographer and designer.. i'm not afraid to name him here, david hockney!! you certainly are talented and i wish you at least as much success with your art as he had..
cheers,
mj

david,
none of your pictures seem weaker than the others to me and I only picked up the latest you've posted because i wanted to make a general comment so it could have been any of them really.. anyway, i'm going to make make another general comment but this time i choose that picture because it shows exactly where you come from and what you're trying to do as well as it has all the qualities i need to illustrate what i'm going to say now..
so, you're using a splendid camera (lucky you) and there is no doubt you can use it, especially when for moments like this one you don't have much time to think before the shot.. not to mention that the panning makes it an arty snap.. some won't miss the opportunity to to call this a decisive moment in the paws of cartier bresson and quite a successful one indeed (need i mention that i've always found the predictive af on modern camera completely boring..). but for me being there at the right time (lucky you again) whether you're a great technician or not is just not enough because i miss the before and the after.. i need the whole story and i'd give anything for it because that's what life is all about.. you're not living only juxtaposed moments but an endless series of more or less important events and sequences and capturing and eventually showing the less important moment is surely as interesting as capturing the one you may find decisive for some reason.. then, that is certainly why i think that whatever the subject you choose to illustrate, you shouldn't put all your efforts in one single shot however good it is in the end because you simply risk loosing the context, hence the interest on the original subject.. see what i mean?

hi,
i've had a look at your portfolio but i'd like to make a global comment if you don't mind.. what's the point in arguing endlessly over technical matters which are rather easy to master anyway with a bit of practice without ever considering other matters which in the end make the difference.. there are probably thousands of pictures like this one taken every year in that particular place.. let's say that 90% of them are simply holiday pictures from photographers who let the camera decide what's good for them and from which one may luckily stand out from time to time.. 5% are taken safely using basic knowledge and very well known photographic rules, then bracketing on everything possible in order to make the best possible picture but the real point there is to get raw material for future use.. another 4% will be more or less successful direct creative attempts from photographers playing with the settings and the result will always be arguable on the creative side and sometimes improvable on the technical side.. and finally only 1% of these pictures will trully be outstanding on every aspects but often for no obvious reasons.. now consistency may be a decisive clue! where do you think you are david?
having seen some of your pictures and read some of your comments, i have a quite clear idea but i'll keep it for myself because beyond the fairly good knowledge of the photographic process you seem to have i am absolutely stunned by your consistent narrowmindedness and great lack of imagination..
cheers anyway,
mj

hi lowell,
well.. you have so many different things on display in your folio, i had to pick up one in order to introduce myself and to say thank you for your kind comments..
so, why this one? mostly because this picture is about everything i like, photography painting and their relationship.. then, assuming that those painting are from a caribbean painter, what i found intriguing is the fact that it shows something different than the "traditional, classical and colorful" caribeean paintings, some would say unequivocal but it seems to me that the equivoque and the contradiction are the real major points of this, aren't they?.. finally and in return i really think those closeup portraits could certainly inspire some photographers.. and in the end i suppose we could call it a metapicture.. interesting and abyssal indeed!

some are obviously having complicated nutritional requirements but it's a good wordplay for a fastidious and well orchestrated fast yet not tedious break..

hi,
without going into any (western) historical or cultural interpretation because of the rather hamiltonesque atmosphere (i'm probably thinking more of his work published in La Danse here), i must say that this is a very nice portrait indeed.. although i'm not 100% convinced that it conveys innocence.. but that's certainly your choice..

hi,
first came to have a look at your painter but i find this quite an interesting presentation with a certain sense of style but i think you could try to work a bit more on how the three pictures work and "talk" together in a way that would probably make more sense as a whole and not only by the simple juxtaposition of the various elements..

hi maurilio,
the rendering of the guy in the background is absolutely fantastic and it has the ultra sharp focus and texture of hyperrealistic painting.. i'd get rid of the bike though..

hi dan,
i've looked at this for several minutes and i find it a quite interesting idea but it appears that you've made a small mistake.. the fonts you've chosen don't match the historical period of the subject and if you get the opportunity to look carefully at the fascist propaganda you'll notice that the poster designers used to abuse mostly of art deco lettering.. mainly because of the maximum visual impact this type of font add to the message and this is probably what yours lack here..

paris is such a famous place that i suppose it's really hard to give a truly innovative view of it and miss any of its recognizable icons at the same time.. sorry but although i,ve never been there there nothing obvious about it here and at first sight i have the feeling that this could be any city nowhere in particular in the world..
