This is a late comment, but I have only just stumbled across your photo.

I love it, Miranda. The buildings in the foreground are sharp, and I think that the fogginess of the buildings in the background is very effective and actually gives the photo a magical feel.

Hi Miranda,

Although I think the composition is a bit symmetric, making it more static than absolutely necessary, I do agree the wide angle is very well used, as it creates a very strong perspective, emphasising the sheer height of the buildings.

I don't think the highlight on the left is really distracting, as it also creates the feel of a hot, almost suffocating summer day in HK.

If you really want to take it out, patching the area with a bit of the column above the highlight and wrapping it over the reflection, using feathering, various layer modes to match the colour, and probably a bit of cloning in the sky would be my suggestion. Not easy, and I don't think it'll be an improvement - come to think of it, the longer I look at your photo, and the harder I try to visualise the same photo without the flare, the more I think you should leave it as is...

Cheers,

hugo

i have some similar photos in my portfolio, some taken from kowloon looking over to HK, and a few from the peak as well. while shooting photos from the peak, i encountered a similar problem. seems that HK weather is very fickle.... keep trying. i might suggest start shooting early in the evening, while the sun is still up and keep shooting as the sun goes down and then after its gone. see what happens.

best wishes. james

Miranda:
Definitely prefer the central focus. The large left-side negative area can be cropped, and the entire image enlarged to pull balance to the more central focus of the composition (attached example) - I really like this shot!

The out of focus front spirals throw the image off. Also, you leave no room for your viewer to determine what these things are or what they mean. A reshoot is in order.

It's rather typical to have the foreground in focus, and in this case, I'd say a foreground focus would have been stronger. That would have allowed the presentation of bigger characters (for those that can read it) and also a better glimpse at the textures of the incense.

I like it. Really adds a different dimension to the dof. Puts the focus directly on the red and the ashes. I think its a great shot.

Hi Miranda, interesting. I know Hollywood rd, but guess I've missed that... By the looks of it, you had plenty of options, and a fairly nondescript background. Very cool photo, I can almost feel the humidity and smell the scents... Very good shot!

Oh, one more thing, when replying to a comment, it's easier to click on the Reply to - link on the right, that way, your reply is sent by email to the person you're replying to.
