Each year on Good Fridays, Filipino Catholic penitents flagellate themselves to seek penance. Hundreds of men throughout provincial towns perform this ritual although it is not condoned and discouraged by the Catholic Church.

The composition is simply elegant and the hues wonderfully complement it.

Great shot - one of those "being there at the right time" moments. The framing combined with the DOF really gives you a sense of the power of this skater. It should be published. Fantastic!

I like the way composition leads the eye towards the mist. The film choice also helps in creating the mood for this image.

Is this somewhere in France? Looks like it and luv that place....I love the the way this image was composed. Especially how the tree line leads the eye into the blinding light at the end of the path. Wonderful...

Thank you all for your comments. This woman was just sitting by her home's doorway just above the road. This was taken just outside of the town of Banaue which is famous for its rice terraces. She didn't flinch one bit when I aimed my lens at her. Her posture is very similar to how some other tribes in the Cordillera mountain range, where this area is located, entomb the deceased. Come to think of it, I should have called the photo "The Living Mummy" instead.

Nice and simple. Dunno, but if the shadow had not been cropped that might've been interesting too,

Thanks for your comments.

No filters were used for this shot. As most of the lights in this image were tungsten, I used tungsten film. Exposure was about a minute. I did a few longer exposures but the water coursing underneath the pier created camera shake at anything longer than that. To have positioned myself a bit further in front of dustbins would not have given me the "length" of the pier that I wanted. But if it's in the "scene" then it's okay by me. I did Photoshop the grafitti off the dust bins at another time and it seems to be just fine too. I don't really like to do anything more on Photoshop than to try and match what I see on my transparencies either.

Hi Maggie --- the image was shot with a Sinar F and a normal lens on Fuji Astia. All backlit and underlit on a light table. No PS to manipulate the image was done. Amazing! I never noticed the "face" in the glass stem before. Thanks for your comment(s).

The vases were part of an exhibit at a trade fair here in the Philippines. I concur that a little less shadow on the right vase would've been better. I should have brought a reflector with me. Focus is on the soft side as this was shot through a gauzy material which was hanging in front of these vases and which could not be moved. Color shift may be due to me not being patient enough with Photoshop to match the colors on the transparency. I was using a Nikon SB28 which was being hand held by a friend of mine aimed through the gauzy material to light the subject.

I like the way it reflects in the water. I probably would prefer not to have the refelction of the sun(?) on the water. A wonderfully serene mood.

Nanette,
No filters were used on the Holga. The vignetting effect comes directly from the Holga itself. It was shot at mid-day as you rcorrectly assumed. Unfortunately I will not be able to do any re-shoots at this location as I am now halfway around the world from it.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Luckily there were not too many people on this bridge - with the exception of the fisherman on the left - as this was close to 11pm when I took this shot. It was exposed for one minute at F11. I agree that the graffiti distracts and will Photoshop it out before I get it printed then.
