Have you got a larger shot of it, if it's not to bold to ask?

Using tungstan light is a smart move to capture the cool mood. In fact 2 dustbin are balancing the picture, imagin without that you may have to crop the blank space. Some one suggested intermediate aperture for avoiding star effect then DOF will be affected. Imagin when you want to make a mural out this picture f5.6 or 4.0 will be a bad aperture. Star effect from the lights are also good.

Neil Shapiro   {K:2032} 4/24/2003
Great shot! I think it's fine with the grafitti, though the character of the shot changes a bit. Actually, I know from reading the comments that you don't want to do this, but my suggestion would have been to try it without the garbage cans at all (cloning them out, rather than reshooting). That would be the better "beautiful" town night shot. As is, it is it's still great, and the graffiti laden cans add character.

Michal Wojciechowski   {K:1279} 4/24/2003
good one - looks like composed using three layers: the pier, the city and Background layer. I like it.

Bob Tomerlin   {K:5460} 4/24/2003
The really captivating thing about this shot is how the street lights lead to the TA builiding, which thrusts up from the "V" made by the lights. Excellent eye!!

  0

Luigi Scuderi   {K:4407} 3/31/2003
splendid nightshot. the only thing that in my view could be better is the star effect, that could be avoided using an intermediate aperture

An excellent photo. The lighting works well in the shot. I often enjoy taking shots like this. I am on the fence about the garbage receptacles. I am against removing the graffiti only because this image captures what you saw. It is not a true photograph with editing of this nature. It is more of an artwork...
Also if you moved beyond these, who is to say that you would not have graffiti on the other ones?
Still a great job. You give me something to shoot for...

Bart Aldrich   {K:7614} 11/26/2002
This is so beautiful. Marc might be right abotu the trash recepticals. On the otherhand, would an image of an American city be complete without some graffiti?
Great image!

Marc Gougenheim   {K:5398} 11/25/2002
If I may, had you gone behind the dustbins, the length would have APPEARED, VISUALLY, exactly the same - this is a perspective law. Best regards.

Ninfa Z. Bito   {K:245} 11/25/2002
Thanks for your comments.

No filters were used for this shot. As most of the lights in this image were tungsten, I used tungsten film. Exposure was about a minute. I did a few longer exposures but the water coursing underneath the pier created camera shake at anything longer than that. To have positioned myself a bit further in front of dustbins would not have given me the "length" of the pier that I wanted. But if it's in the "scene" then it's okay by me. I did Photoshop the grafitti off the dust bins at another time and it seems to be just fine too. I don't really like to do anything more on Photoshop than to try and match what I see on my transparencies either.

Kenneth Liang   {K:290} 11/25/2002
I have a question, when doing these type of shots, what is the norm for the exposure time?

How many seconds did it take for you to get such a brightly lit image?

  0

Marc Gougenheim   {K:5398} 11/24/2002
Good shot, but what about walking a bit further to the front ? I doubt that the dustbins were meant to be the main subject. Standing just behind them can only be better, I believe... All else is fine. Regards.

Will Thorne   {K:75} 11/24/2002
that is amazing. did you edit it digitally yet? did you use any filters? i LOVE the tones.

Terrence Kent   {K:7023} 12/7/2001
Let me cast one vote in favor of keeping the image as is, that graffiti adds a great layer of what i can only call "mood", without it the image would still be very strong, but with it there's a sort of feel that this is the reality in someone's head - looking at a page from a beautifully crafted comic book, social commentary - and anything that adds a little life to the mix~

Ninfa Z. Bito   {K:245} 10/31/2001
Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Luckily there were not too many people on this bridge - with the exception of the fisherman on the left - as this was close to 11pm when I took this shot. It was exposed for one minute at F11. I agree that the graffiti distracts and will Photoshop it out before I get it printed then.

Chris Lawrence   {K:124} 10/30/2001
Very nice... I love the colors. I guess the tungsten film cools it off considerably. Nice work!

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17558} 10/30/2001
This is a WOW photograph. You did a great job capturing the sky, lights, etc. Do you remember the shutter speed/aperture? Agree with Jason regarding the graffiti, but this is still a terrific terrific image.

Jason Bennett   {K:213} 10/30/2001
I've driven by the TA building and down the Embarcadero literally thousands of times. I worked around the corner from where this shot was taken. What I love about this photo is I have NEVER "seen" this before. This photo portrays an area with which I am very familiar, in a way I have never experienced or "seen." Excellent !! If possible, I would use Photoshop to remove the graffiti from the trash cans because it detracts from the image but other than that... Great job !! JCB
