What I love about this shot is the balance in your composition Kim. It is beautifully done. An excellent job. :-)

I agree with Alisa. It is clean and simple. Pastel colors and a cloudless sky. Your trees are well-balanced in the frame. A nice shot Eric.

Hehe... now you're getting there mate ;-) Don't you love the colors :-) I'm so glad to see you out of bed and hitting dawn. The more you go, the better chance you have for outragous light. Try even closer next time. Just imagine what it would feel like with that wave right on top of you.

Hmmmm... I like the angle and balance very much. It works nicely, but I am not connected with the photo. Maybe because it's at 480 pixels and not on a wall, but I think that the foreground should be closer to draw the viewer into the scene more. Just my 2 cents Rog, all and all a very nice shot. :-)

I especially like the balance of the shot. The strong tree in a third of the frame and the "imaginary" lines leading from the lower left and right corners that take you down the path. As you and I have already discussed, the shot needs to be larger than 640 pixels to be appreciated. The sharpness too looks perfect. Well done.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the comments. Send me your email address and I'll answer you directly, rather than posting inside the comments area of your shots. info@johnshephard.com

John

P.S. The article was thorough and well-written.

Next time Eric, you should ask the owners to move their cars or blow them up if they don't comply :-). Nonetheless, the clouds are wonderful with immense motion. Like I suggested in chat, get in the water next time and see what you get with the long exposures. Way to get out of bed ;-)

It's one of those that needs to be large to be fully appreciated. Somewhere in the south I imagine? A very lovely pastoral scene Michaelle, with nice lines, angles and tones.

Way to go Chels! Excellent job to hide the sun behind the tree to reduce flare. The ripples are outstanding.

Nice vertical Roger. I like the lines and composition. I bet you have a million buildings in Tokyo that would be well-photographed with your panocam. :-)

It's a nice location Natalie. The bench, tree, harbour and cityscape work well together. It is a hard shot to hold together with the foreground so much darker than the background (cityscape). An ND grad filter would hold back the brightness of the city and expose it more evenly with the foreground.

Look for more dramatic lighting. Sunrise, sunset, early morning and late afternoon (golden light) are great times to shoot. You'll get better shadow play and colour. I'd love to see this location shot again with different light. Do you use a tripod and a cable release? If not, you should. It will take your photography to another level.

Well done, keep of the good work. You live in a landscaper's paradise!

It's very intense. Makes me feel as though I am in the front row. B&W film works wonderfully. Love it.

I like the balance of the four trees in this shot and the path leading out of the left corner. I imagine you could get some wonderful fall shots in Japan. How do you like your TX-1?

Lovely toning in the image. Great composition. One of the better PV cathedral shots I have seen. Congratulations.

The composition is nice, but the shot is too soft. ALWAYS use a tripod and a cable release to acheive superior sharpness in your shots.

Great foreground subject. All you need is the sun to explode with color. Keep getting up early and you'll get the color. What do you think about the attached crop?

Cool Glen. Literally, I'd imagine ;-). Nice timing and the low angle works for me. Wonder what would happen with a little fill flash?

I think it is a well-balanced shot. It may be the scan, but it seems soft. Did you use a tripod? If not, I think using one for your landscape shots will take you to another level. Keep them coming.

I agree with what the others have said. A tripod and cable release are a must. If on a tripod, stop down to f8 and you will have more in focus.

Such a lovely spot. Using an 81B will take away the blue cast that you have around the water.

It will make the shot look more like this one: http://www.kenduncan.com/images/u/QX523.jpg

It's worth it to wade in the water :-)

A simple, uncluttered composition could help this shot a lot. The twigs make the shot busy, confusing to the eye, and not interesting. You can make these types of shots work. Check out this photographer's ability to make a simple composition work so well:

Also, you should use a tripod. If you are serious about getting good landscape shots, always use a tripod.

The biggest thing that stands out for me is the flat light. It doesn't help your shot and if you had waited (or arrived earlier) for the "golden light" you would have a better image. If thatr wasn't possible, a polarizar is a good choice for midday light. I realize that you wanted to frame the shot with the tree on the left, but there is no sense of balance here. Balance, IMO, is one of the most important components in a landscape shot.

The colors are great, but that's all there is. So many sunrise/sunset shots are just that. Color with nothing else. While it is fine for what it is, it is a 'dime a dozen' shot. A better approach would have been to stop eating, grab your camera and tripod and sprint down to the beach to get waves lapping and reflecting in this beautiful color. Foreground objects, ie rocks, tidal pools, etc can take a great sky and turn it into a fantastic shot. Also, it must be way inder exposed because you should have the sky reflecting into the sea, which IMO, would have been a much better look.

So sharp! As I'd expect from you Terry, the flash is spot on. I like the image how it is, but a crop certainly wouldn't hurt. Great capture.
