About Hi!

i was in a dark place when i was trying to capture our new African Gray Parrot - i called him "Admiral!"-

anyway, i was using the Manual mode.. BUT! I couldn't reach a good result whatever my Aperture or Shutter speed was there was always a "problem".. However, when I changed the ISO to 800, F/2.8, and 1/30 sec I've got good shots and this is one of them!

btw, i called it the "Feathers stairs" cuz i'm hoping to climb the soft stairs to reach a good level in using my new gear "20D" and this Macro Lens! lol!

AT the end, the result is like this - a bit more "punch" in the tones IMO

Regards

Carsten

Click-draw the marked points, create an "S" shaped curve. Try out for yourself what fits best here, I think a slight increase in the darker areas and an upwards shift of the whites, and a slight left-shift of the midtones is nice.
Mater of taste, but thats the fun with PS, lots of choices for you !

The next step should be a try with the "curves" function, nice tool for individual tweaks of contrast more in the darker or brighter parts, as needed (better than contrast adjustment, IMO)
Click "image > adjustments > curves": you see an adjustment line, a correlation of befor and after grey values. Click on the line, and you get a black mark there.

Now, whites look better (IMO)

As you can see, the curve is shifted to the left, and there is no y value @ the "white end", that is the right side, represents the frequency of whites in your photo. So, it has a flat, more grey lookin aspect.
Drag the white slider to the left, until you meet the curve

?cause you asked for some PS hints, let me take this photo and show what I would change to bring out the nice geometric patterns here:
first, I would recommend a look in the "Levels" histogram:
