Jim very good observation , Yes the dart was on a string. I just let it go and it swings into the balloon.

7+++++++ another incredible and wonderful pic.
the only thing that I can say you is that in the finishes seemingly that the picture of the dart it is more behind that in the picture of up. definitively that is not flaw of the picture, but when placing the picture in the square.
take a look at the attach so that you understand what I say.
congratulations and continues with the incredible good work. Congrats and God bless you

Once again, a wonderful series of shots and a superb concept. (Though for a perfectly balanced overall effect, I would prefer the bottom dart further to the right...)

The question is how many tries did it take to get this? Is the dart on a string or was it actually thrown? Great sequence!

Great job (again):) It looks like the last arrow traveled backwards from the middle one. Was that from the initial force of the impact or did were the photos not lined up perfectly?

Nice. I like the middle shot, as it is THE decisive moment.

So, how many shots did it take to capture this?

There is not enough continuity in this series to make the illusion as suggestive as it could be. Since we have all already seen "high-fps-film-camera-bullet-through-the-apple-stuff" and we know shots like that are still impossible with digital (no digital camera can shoot that fast yet), so we must hoodwink the viewer. In essence, because anyone with a brain will know there will be some digital manipulation going on, your job as the photog is to make that manipulation as transparent as possible, in order to trick the discerning veiwer that this was done in one take. For me, the series is problematic, largely because the bottom dart appears behind the dart in the second (middle frame) when it should be farther to the right and because the dart appears to have a flat spin when the tailfin should be rotating. This means two things... first, you can tell this wasn't done in one take (not many people could really tell this though, but I am nitpicky, and remember every single frame of the bullet going through the apple in my science textbook) and second, it draws my attention to the fact the positions of the ballon and dart change from frame to frame, ever so slightly. After chewing this through in my mind for a little while I came up with 3 options that may improve your photo (I would do them myself but I am super busy today). 1) recrop to give the bottom frame a slight nudge to the right. 2) In addition to #1 reshoot just the dart against the black screen with different tailfin rotations and see which two versions of the dart convey a more realistic spin. 3) 1 and 2 and combine the best images into the perfect montage (not too hard because of the solid background). Also, it might be nice to create a version (diptych) of the second frame and then the last frame without the dart.

Pay close attention to the exact positions of both the dart and the ballon using the XY axis indicator in PS in your final presentation and I think your client may be happier.

Sorry to be so anal, but commercial means getting paid, and getting paid means getting it right.

Last thing, the lighting (which is almost impossible for this shot, I know) needs to be more diffused, or the clone stamp tool employed, so the catchlight on the ballon remains consistent for the frames where the balloon is still intact. This is almost impossible again, but it could be done.

I know this shot you are trying to is next to impossible to pull off with with the current digital cameras. But with digital post process montages having come so far in the last year, this shot should really be better than its film predecessor. Perhaps too much reliance on the camera and not enough montaging and masking with PS? PS actually makes this shot much easier than with film, but you have to assemble the pieces rather than hope the disparate parts of the frame (with the balloon on one side and the dart on the other) will cooperate, at least sometimes.

Good work, you are 99% of the way there.

I'm saving all these to my favourites so I can say one day when I see them all hanging in a gallery...."I saw the proto types way back when"...

Another great idea Dan. I really enjoy this series....oh and remind me never to play darts with you.

Cheers - Ann :)
