The little patches are plant growth that has reached the surface of the water. The lake doesn't have great depth to it.

Bill, beautiful Fall Landscape photo. I love the colors and the reflections. I'm curious, I think I see those are little currents in the surrounding waters(the patches). If not,let me know what I'm seeing. ;) This PA area reminds me of a place down in VA. (Lake Anna) which also very beautiful.
