About This is the city of Newcastle, (known locally as the 'Toon'), Taken in the late afternoon.

The blue building is the civic centre. It appears to be colour-coordinated, with the Millennium footbridge, across the river Tyne.(seen edge-on, at the bottom of the image)

Taken from 4 miles distant, with my Canon S2 at full 12x zoom. My first 'night shot'.

*note* I had no tripod, so used my gym bag, stuffed through a hole in a fence, to hold the camera still, for the long shutter speed!

1 second shutter speed. Aperture at f3.6
Focal length 72mm (432mm equiv)

The city lights make a wonderful night-scene image. Remarkable sharpness for a fully zoomed shot without tripoed.

Colin, it's odd you should suggest that because I tried just last month. The exposures were (if I remember right) 1/8th and 1/15th with 400 ISO film. I rested them on the railings of a pedestrian overpass but they were still hopelessly blurred. The scenes would have been fine apart from the blurring. I may go back and try with an RF camera, as these are much less susceptible to camera shake.

WOW Colin, Great night shot. I havne't dabbled in night photography yet. Maybe later but if and when I do I hope my first comes out half as good. You've captured the lights so clear and with a slow shutter speed too. I thought the lights would burn out with slow speeds at night. Like I said - don't know anything about night shots. Great detail you have here in the buildings and nice colour. Well seen and captured.

Thanks also for tkaing the time to view and comment on my images.

Cheers - Ann :)

Great shot for me Colin. That lens has certainly compressed things.4 Miles? - Can you now turn around and do the same for Jarrow and send it to Roger in Tokyo.

Thanks, Roger. I put the camera on a bag, and set the self-timer. To minimize the shake - even though the Canon S2 has an excellent stabilizer, it can't work miracles for a one second exposure!

Try some of that garishly lit, Tokyo, night city scape, Roger. I'm sure you'd get lots of comments.

Amazing one second long telephoto exposure. No signs of camera shake! And a very nice image, too. I can't even manage a 60th sec. on a 100mm lens! Argh!!

Thanks, Ellen. You're right about the need for a clockwise rotation (maybe 0.5 degree). Well observed.

When I took this, I had no tripod, and stood the camera on my gym bag, and stuffing it through a hole in a fence! As a result, the image was tilted to the left. I had to do a lot of rotation, and didn't quite get it right!

Very nice and crisp for a more or less handheld shot, Colin! I like the way the civic centre really stands out.

That's wicked awesome damn fine shot marra. I will have to give night shooting more of a try.
One thing it seems to need just a bit of a tip down on the right. Seems to be running up hill some. Like the slow witted person I am it just hit me you took this from 4 miles away?!! Wow.
Hugs to you and M.
Ellen
