Thanks for taking an interest, Ray. There are lots of different types of spirit house and this one is very much 'standard', and in probably the most popular colour at the moment.

I think I mentioned some time that spirit houses sprang from a pre-Buddhist animistic tradition that was adopted. I'd be interested in finding out more about its 'history' but doubt if Thais actually know much about that - though obviously styles change over time. Let me know if you find out more!
