How great to be able to even see this - thanks to those ice crystals, Gary. Beautiful work.

Hi Harry, a sundog is a little "rainbow" type effect caused by clouds or ice crystals in the air. It is at 90? to the sun (ie on the same horizon as the sun) and sometimes is part of a whole ring around the sun though this effect I have only seen in the arctic. Thanks for the comments, Cheers, Gary

What?s a sundog? it looks like a double sun or is it the sun shining trough the tiny clouds?
Anyhow it?s a nice shot great lighting.

Beautiful light on this one. Such an eerie, mystical effect.

Hi Ann, I have a few poor quality northern lights pics. Northern Baffin, believe it or not, is actually too far north (or at least too close to the magnetic north pole) to get great northern lights. In all the years I was up there, only on 2 or 3 occasions were they quite bright. They were very common, but mostly very faint. Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Gary

So this is called a sundog. Fascinating. Another moody capture. I love it. Do you have any images of the Northern Lights Gary? Would love to see some if you have. Cheers - Ann :)

hi Christian... well to say that I bracket "systematically" would be a bit of an overstatement. I do sometimes, but not on a regular basis. I do go by the camera metering also, no handheld meter. Maybe if I had one I would get better results more often? Thanks for your comments. cheers, Gary

This phenomenon is ... phenomenal. Usually occuring under very misty if not mystic light conditions. It's a challenge to catch, without flaring and having just the right exposure. As you work with slides, it shows that you have a solid mastery of your readings. Just wonder if you rely only on the metering of the camera - do you use a haldheld meter, or do you bracket systematically ?

Great image, I like the soft color and it looks as if there is a rainbow, a slight touch of a rainbow, and that slight touch really addes something special to the image! Very well done Gary!!

thanks Naomi. I've seen those white "rainbow" kinda things, but in fog, not rain, so I just called them "fogbows"!! It was actually curving like a rainbow, whereas sundogs tend to be small bright patches at 90? to the sun. Yes, you should find it a post it!! thanks for the comment. gary

Nice capture of the sundog, Gary. Somewhere I have a slide of a white rainbow, which I'm told is actually a sundog. I should try to find it. -- Naomi
