Thanks for the thoughts Ned, and you do sound busy! The hurricane did hit here in Louisiana, not where we live but we have a son who lives in New Orleans. He lost all the first floor, furnishing and everything. So very sad. Take care of yourself and we look forward to more of your images! Darlene

OH DEAR!! you live there!
you're in Louisiana. I thought Katrina attacked new orleans!! or was it rita that struck louisiana?
ok .. i'm hopeless at geography .. even our little land's geography :(
Moreover, for 3 months, I haven't watched TV as i've moved flat twice in the 3 months!!

your troubles are much worse than mine .. actually there's no comparison!

sorry for you, dear! you must have suffered a lot! lots of victims, homeless people, bad weather, .... a real tragedy!

praying for you.

Hi Darlene,
So far, I haven't tried to add anything to an all black eye on an owl. I did try just adding a small bright dot to a crow's eye in a shot I was fooling around with and that seemed to work pretty well. I didn't post the shot because I wasn't happy with it for other reasons. If I find some method that works well I'll let you know.

You were so right Dana, it was so hard to take pictures of such horrible tragedy, but it will document the hard work all of these good peole were puttinng in to start over. Maybe one day they will want to look back after they have rebuilt. Darlen

Thanks Ned! I really appreciate your comments on my pics, I think they help a lot in my learning and I get so many good suggestions here at UF! And I know the feeling about being late in commenting, it's been busy here with all kinds of things, including hurricanes.....I sure hope they leave us alone for awhile (a good while!) Darlene

The catch light in his eye was there, I have a lot of owl shots where there are none. I am told that it is easy to add them but I have not succeeded with it, do you have any ideas on adding them? Darlene

Hi Darlene,
Your braver than me, I had to turn the camera off,
too overwelming. Have to go down one more time to sell the salvage of the RV and then that's it for several years. FEMA and construction workers are taking over all RV Parks on the coast. Even the yearly Snow Birds at the park we stayed at are being told 1st. come 1st. served. Also prices for spaces have tripled, now $1000.00 a month. Hopefully our AG will stop this with some arrests.
It looks like we're permanent Jackson residents for the next several years. Hope all goes well for you.

Dana. I hope that you are all doing o.k. in Biloxi, we have a camp below Houma, it's built up on pilings but we had a 8-9 foot surge! We had storage sheds with all our fishing "stuff" and lots of other "stuff" like an ice machine, etc! We got shingles missing and one broken window, right behind the computer, not sure if it go wet or not, But all in all we are counting our blessing, all the people who lived in the area had 4 feet of water in their homes and lost it all., I am going down there tomorrow and take pictures for the insurace company but also of the destruction. I may try and post some here at UF. Here's praying for now more storms in the gulf of mexico or anywhere for that matter! Take care my friend. Darlene

Beautiful BW, great details and love the tones.
Well, see your posting, hope 'Rita' was kind to Ya'll. Bunch of rain and a bunch of little Tornadoes over this way. 1 did some damage up in the Delta. Jackson came out clean this time.

Hi Darlene :)
Tt's been a long time.
Thank you very much for your comments on my photos .. and sorry for my late reply as I've been really busy with the university, work and family.

Well .. about this image .. the composition is wonderful and i like the dangling leaves and branches. The DOF is great too.
mmmmmm .. the only thing i can say against this is the B&W conversion. I think it would look better in colour as even though the background id nicely blurred it's a bit distracting cus of the harsh contrast between the bright (white) sky and darker trees and leaves.
Best regards,
ned

Darlene,
I'm leaning more towards prefering those darker sepia tones at the moment. But I remember trying sepia on my owl shots and not being happy with them. This shot in a more standard greyscale looks perfect to me! Nice and bright with lots of detail!
Another thing I found with my owl shots was I couldn't get a glint in the eye like you have here. Was that natural or did you add it afterwards?

A wonderful monochrome of this noble predator, Darlene. The BW adds a winter feel, and class, to an already exceptional image. The detail, focus and foliage framing, make this one of your best. 7.
