About
By the time I was inside the Astrodome taking this picture, it was declared ?fully packed? with 11,375 people and closed to further New Orleans evacuees while a line of 60+ more busloads waited to be unloaded. Unfortunately, these individuals who arrived from a desperate situation are now facing another desperate situation here.
Harris County Fire Marshal's Office ordered that no more evacuees be accepted.
Tired, distraught passengers got off the last bus and shouted angrily as police officers told them they could not stay.
"We've got sick people in here and this is how you treat us!" one man shouted. "Welcome to Houston! I hope a hurricane comes to Houston!"
This photo is a true capture of what I saw, taken with available light at 1600 ISO, 1/20 and f/3.5, non-cropped. Sorry about the noise. Sorry about the darkness. Sorry about the chaos at this place that some people compared to a human market while others called their paradise.
Under whatever name it was labeled, I want to offer this to you asking for help, and offer it to my hero, Ray Nagin, the mayor who called federal officials to ?Get off your asses? and indirectly sent this message to the US president, ?God is looking down on all this, and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price. Because every day that we delay, people are dying and they're dying by the hundreds, I'm willing to bet you.?.
?Mr. Nagin: you may be in deep trouble with your position as a elected mayor. But I want to tell you, your people who made it here to Texas, they are OK and under one way or another, they are taken care of?.

excellent capture of a terrible event... as to the Mayor, well.. he is not much of hero since the President had to almost order him to evacuate the city.. (thank God he did!) and when the Mayor finally did get "off his ass", he did not make any provisions for the poor who could not leave... it is unforgiveable that the local, state, and federal governments were so ill prepared for this event...thanks for sharing
it's funny both your country and mine reacted extremely fast to the devistation in Sumatra earlier this year pledging millions of dollars, yet when its our own it seams as if they dont give a hoot, i know the logistical nightmare a natural devistation can be, but we were in Sumatra by this timeline early this year. I know i went. the only thing i can say and i'm not political, dont blame the top dog. if the actors want to help get off the TV blaming people, roll up their sleaves and get down there and help
