nice point of view ;)

I wonder how it is that the background is so dark while we can see that it was taken in front of windows

This photo is close to genius... The pose, expression and crop are perfect, and technically it works beautifully.

Nice portrait Mel'! Sharp yet subtle. I've just joined USEfilm yesterday (17.07.05), Though I've been a keen ameteur snapper for a while now.

Ps. Thx for the comments on my first pic, of the abstract Poppy. We may not be pros, but we have a passion and an eye for photos it would seem.

Thanks, Tiff. I held the camera up for this one. I could have put my tripod on the counter, I suppose, but for me, it's a lot harder to compose a self portrait with a tripod. I didn't really have to hold it up that high. I just sort of tilted it towards me as I held it up which gave it sort of an akward angle.

I really like the reflection in the eyes. Also, very nice lighting and color. The DOF is very effective, as is the unusual angle.

So you want to know my secrets, eh??? LOL... just kidding.

Well, first of all, my favorite window to use is in my bathroom. It is one of those windows that is not transparent, so it diffuses the light really well. Also, I make sure there are no other light sources. Because I usually have to put my camera in macro mode to pick up ANY detail, the DOF is very shallow. So it usually only picks up on the subject where the light is hitting and drowns out the background.

What I usually do as far as editing.... sometimes I add a dodge and burn layer to bring out detail. The opacity is usually only adjusted to about 5, but it helps in bringing out some detail and the burn layer will darken the background a little more. THEN, on my portrait shots I will usually add a layer with a diffused glow effect to smooth out the skin tone (I don't feel the need to immortalize zits and whatnoot). Again, I usually keep the opacity REALLY low so it still looks natural, but this also helps to black out the background.

By this time most of the background is already blacked out and I just use the push brush to brush over any areas that aren't completely blacked out. That's it!

If I had more space I would simply compose the shot without all the crap in it so I wouldn't have to do that, BUT my house is less than a thousand sq. ft. so that would be virtually impossible! LOL

Mel,love the perspective of this shot. Once again, great use of window light(*whispering* oh great window light cenci)! How do you black out the background? I love how you do it, what is your technique?

Great shot Mel, nice angle. Very nice soft colors. Did you have to hold the camera way over head or does your tripod go up that high? Well done!
