Hi Manu, Many thanks for your comment, no one has looked at that photo for months so i'm surprised you found it. I'm pleased to see you now have a D70! I have one to and am very pleased with it. I also laughed when i read your about in this photo :) Your not serious are you? I have a small penlight which i take with me and set the exposure by using the manual scale on the lens. Generally i'm stopped down anyway to get a longer effect, even if it is night time. Of course i use a tripod (gitzo) and my remote release. If your stopped down then the DOF isn't that critical for this type of scenery anyway. I actually use the stopwatch/countdown on my mobile phone to warn me when the exposure is finished, this way i have taken images over several minutes with very little problems. The effect you have achieved here is really good - kind of erie (or should that be eery?). Best wishes from Switzerland Neil

The soft focus actually enhances this one, Manu. I love the overall feel and colors. I wouldn't change a thing.

manu,
yeah, focusing in the dark is pretty darn hard but you did fine here. i like the effect of the sharp rocks in the fore with a gradual softening effect towards the back without getting the background too oof. i have a couple of suggestions for focusing in this situation:
- crank down to the smallest possible apperture and then back-up one stop. so if your lens can do f/22, try f/16 or f/20. being nighttime, the result need not be ultra sharp.
- focus manually and set it to infinity. this is a bit tricky as it doesn't always work the way you think it will. especially if you want the foreground in focus. in that case try:
- using the hyperfocal scale. sadly, today's zooms don't have a hyperfocal scale but there are ways around this. the manual (yes, i don't read it either) for the lens should include a hyperfocal scale. i made myself a little spreadsheet with hyperfocal settings for my most-used lenses and carry it in my bag. this would allow you to predefine your dof from just a few feet in front of you to infinity. works like a charm. let me know if you more info on this as i have a few links i could send you.
now, as to the photo itself, i like the strong graphical composition with alternating lines of color and texture. very effective. however, i think that it's a bit oversharpened and it shows on the rocks. i also see a bit of jpeg compression artifacts in a few spots. not sure if you did it in search of better "focus" or if it's an effect of your workflow. i have more tips for this too. let me know if you want further spew from me ;^)
and hey, you got the horizon straight! focusing couldn't have been that hard ;^) in all seriousness, tho, a great photo. if you hadn't asked, i probably wouldn't have brought any of this up as it is truly nitpicking.
keep em coming, tom
ps - thanks for your comment on the fly. it seems you are the only one who "got it". thanks.

Amazing shot! I love the range of blue hues and the long exposure adds a lot mystery to this shot. It doesn't look like you could use any help with long exposures--this one is perfect! :)

Super shot, WOW-effect definitely present!!!! What a great blue (one of my favorite colors) and what a view, excellent composition... well captured!!! Well as for your statement and question.... it looks like even though you're new to 'slowmo' or long exposure shots, there not a lot I can say to improve on this result as it's spot on!!!! BTW it looks like quite a punnishment being over there.... and if I had to endure a harrowing day to get this as a sort of compensation.... lets have it.... ;-D!!!

a strong abstract moment...and if you would like to increase this feeling I would do a hard crop...taking away completely the coast line...would leave it like a planet surface of my dreams :)
