About This is a scan from an old photograph that I took back in early 1997, when comet Hale-Bopp was at its best. For several days, it remained the brightest comet seen in many years, an unmistakable and spectacular sight even to the naked eyes. This photo is a five minutes exposure taken with the camera and its 50mm lens riding piggyback on a Celestron C8 telescope (to track the motion of the stars). I remember it being a cold night, but the sight was well worth the trek!

I was about 7 when I saw Hale-Bopp, and I remember looking at it from the top of a small mountain, then unaware of what it was. So incredible! Great picture.

Thanks for the wonderful comments Shane! I also have vivid memories of Hale-Bopp, what an awe-inspiring sight that was. Hard to believe it's been 8 years already. Maybe a while before we get to see another one this big and bright... but who knows for sure? I still think Hyakutake in 1996 was even more awesome due to its amazingly long tail across the night skies. Even from Orleans in my backyard, the tail went well over 20 degrees... I sure wished I could have seen it under darker skies!!

Hi Pierre,

This is simply an amazing shot!!!!! The long exposure and dark skies allowed you to get the second tail which is what made Hale-Bopp and extra special comet. I remember this comet so well. It was deathly cold to try to take a shot of it, and it happened during a full moon making it even harder to get the finer details. Well well done Pierre!! Nice presentation.

Wonderful, Pierre. Hmm, it reminds me of a poster I have of Hale-Bop. It's a great one, too. Oh yeah, that's right--the poster is one of your pictures. Great job.
