About	In this photo I want to show more of the Rio São Francisco and how it springs from the ground. The river source consists of several small springs, hidden and protected by grasses and other vegetation. This is fed by vast underground water systems, extending through vast expanses of Brasil and the rest of South America. They come up through faults in Serra da Canastra's calcareous rock. The range where the Canastra mesa is located is known as Brasil's "waterbox". Two great rivers originate here: this one, the São Francisco, courses North and East. The other one, the Paraná river, springs across in neighbouring Serra da Babilônia, courses West and South towards Paraguay and Argentina, forms the Iguaçú Falls and drives Itaipú hydorelectric power station, which powers the whole of Paraguay and most of Southern Brasil. +++ PS: minimal work - some levels, curves and slight darkening of the corners by blended layers; some cloning to retouch a rock that was too bright; then b&w conversion through channel mixer and toning via duotone. I used monochrome because the rusty grasses were too distracting and I wanted the forms and textures to come through with emphasis.
